Bobby watched from the partially opened bedroom door as Jack rocked back and forth in the rocking chair, his arms wrapped around his knees, his eyes swollen and red-rimmed.
He entered the room and knelt in front of him, entwining his hand with Jack's, dropping a kiss on the cool skin. He waited in silence. Jack's shoulders shook faintly as he rocked.
"I had the dream again," he whispered. Bobby grimaced, the same dream that had kept Jack from sleeping properly for almost a week. He stood beside Jack and pulled his head close, until it rested on his chest.
He ran his fingers through Jack's hair slowly. "Maybe you should talk to someone," he suggested.
Jack shrugged half-heartedly. "I just can't get the image out of my mind."
Bobby nodded. "Nothin's gonna happen to you sweetheart. I promise."
Jack sighed. "It's not as simple as that," he said, his voice muffled by his knees.
"I wish it would stop," he mumbled.
Bobby closed his eyes. "I wish I could help you," he said, his voice rough and ragged.
"It's the same every night, the guns, the bullets, the freezing cold, and the snow," he said softly.
Bobby gritted his teeth, as the same gnawing feeling of helplessness, the same wave of guilt, and the burning urge to destroy whoever had hurt his Jack, washed over him. He tilted Jack's head to face him and gently kissed him, easing the pain in his eyes.
"It's just a dream Jackie. Doesn't mean it's going to come true," he said.
