Tess Tyler descended the long, white staircase in her party dress on her seventh birthday, her long blonde curls pushed back from her face with a white flower headband. Today would be her perfect day, all attention focused on her. She would play with her friends and eat birthday cake and receive presents from her friends and relatives. Tess always loved her birthday.
She received many pretty things for her birthday, and she guessed what almost every single one of them was before they were handed to her. All except one. Her father placed in front of her a heavy, square object coated in shiny, luminous, silver paper with a huge purple bow. She admired this for a few seconds before kneeling down and un-wrapping the package, as it was far too heavy for her to lift herself. She gasped as she pulled back the silver paper. It was a book, a huge book illustrated with magical creatures and princesses and written with happily ever afters. And she treasured it. That night after she'd brushed her teeth and settled down in bed her Daddy read the first story to her, Sleeping Beauty. It became her favourite instantly. She adored the beautifully illustrated pictures of Aurora and the story of forbidden love and romance. Many stories in the book she loved but Sleeping beauty may have been her favourite.
When Tess turned ten her father passed away, and she could no longer stand to look at the pictures or read the beautiful book anymore. She stopped believing in fairytales and once upon a time. With her Daddy gone, how could she possibly have a happy ending?
When Tess turned thirteen she moved to California, and throughout moving she managed to lose the book – which she had left un-opened for the past three years. She felt childish to do but sat in bed that night, watching the animated version of Sleeping beauty and sobbing. The last connection she had to her father she had clumsily lost, and she couldn't believe she could be so stupid. She searched and searched for it among the boxes for weeks, before she finally came to conclusion it was gone forever, just like her Daddy.
At the age of sixteen, Tess attended Camp rock for the second time. But it wasn't as special as the first time, because this year Shane Gray would be attending as an instructor. Secretly, Tess had always been in love, wait – scratch that – infatuated with Shane Gray. She saw him for the first time during dance class – and knew he had to make him hers. He was her prince charming, and suddenly, fairytales made sense all over again.
Until they came crashing down again, an on-coming storm in the form of Mitchie Torres. She was the ugly stepsister in her Cinderella story. Mitchie came out of no-where and stole her prince charming away, leaving her with no-one to hold onto, nothing to believe in – she would go to the ball, but alone, dejected and dateless.
Mitchie stole the spotlight, became the princess, and got the guy. Where did this leave Tess Tyler? She knew fairytales always ended in happily ever after, so she wanted to know where hers had disappeared to, and why Mitchie had gained what was rightfully hers.
And they all lived happily ever after.
