THE LAST CALL
by Livi
Dean was on the phone with Sam when he died.
"Dean? Where are you?" Sam asked but Dean never got to answer him. He died, half lying down. His back against a tall oak tree, his hands slick with blood and the cell phone still in his right hand.
Sam's voice would continue calling his name until the battery died.
He'd been in Colorado. Taking care of a small pack of werewolves in the Arapaho National Forest. He'd been lucky and wasted all of them, or so he'd thought. The last, a grey mean one had gotten the drop on him just when he'd started to relax. It hadn't hurt at first, and he'd actually thought it might not be so bad when he had felt something in his throat.
He'd known what it was before he brought his right hand to his lips. He didn't need to see the red on his fingers to know it was his own blood.
He'd followed the path down to the car. Thinking he might be okay. That once he reached the car he'd be able to drive off and everything was going to be fine.
Now he wasn't so sure.
He sat down when he couldn't go on anymore. He felt out of breath. His chest hurt and he was dizzy. He found his cell phone in his left pocket. The battery was almost dead but he figured it would be more than enough for the call he was making.
His vision was blurry, but he found the right button. He could dial this number with his eyes closed if need be.
The phone rang six times before someone picked it up.
"Dean?" his brother sounded tired and Dean could easily picture him on his bed or sofa; books and papers everywhere.
He tried to speak but the air to do so just wasn't there. Instead he let out a groan and shifted his position a little. "Dean? Is that you? Dean, what's wrong?" His brother sounded worried and Dean wanted to reassure him that everything was fine.
"Dean? Where are you?"
I'm right here he wanted to say, but he couldn't get the words out as all process of thought slowly ceased.
Fin.
