Derek is rushed to the hospital by ambulance after being hit by a truck on the side of the road. He is unable to speak, but is completely aware of his surroundings. He knows something is wrong, very wrong, and hopes the doctors can fix this before it's too late.
When the ambulance door opens, the first face he sees is the last face he ever would of expected. It's Addison. He has not seen her in years, so he must be dreaming, right?
"I thought she was off in California working at some private practice?" He thinks.
Addison's heart is in her stomach when she helps the EMTs load Derek off the ambulance and into the stretcher. How is Derek, her Derek, here in front of her? She had not told anyone she was back in Washington for a few weeks to help an expecting mother of quintuplets that needed surgery. She thought it was best to get the job done and leave, with no haunting memories of the past, and the life she could have had.
There was not a single day that went by that Addison did not think of Derek. And now he was here, right in front of her. She could tell instantly that he was in critical condition. She would not let anything to happen to him. "I'm here, you're safe Der," she told him.
Addison immediately began giving orders to all the doctors as soon as the hospital doors opened. "I need an MRI and CT scan for this patient STAT!" she demanded. It did not matter that she was only a visiting doctor, the surgeons in this small hospital all worshiped her, and they followed her orders promptly.
Derek felt a huge rush of relief when he saw Addison's face. Even after all that they had been through, he knew he could trust her. In a medical sense, at least. She was an amazing doctor. He always admired that about her.
Addison continued to order around the doctors as Derek received the best medical attention these doctors have ever given. He was soon rushed into surgery for a brain contusion, and Addison went to the gallery to watch.
She immediately dialed Amelia, Derrick's brain surgeon sister, whom she still happened to have on speed dial. Amelia gave her frantic, but thoughtful medical advice through the phone as she rushed into the car to meet them at the hospital. And of course, Meredith joined her in the passenger seat.
Derrick could hear and see everything that was going on around him. He was amazed at Addison's ability to stay calm and collected in this environment. He saw how much these doctors looked up to her, and in a way, he looked up to her right now too. She had transformed into a strong, independent woman in the years since he had seen here. And on top of that, she looked great, like she was more whole now than she had ever been.
When he woke up, it was Addison's eyes he was looking into, and Addison's hand he was holding. He felt a rush of emotion, and so did she, as she leaned in to kiss him. In that moment, both Derek and Addison realized that this incident may have been meant to bring them together.
"I am so so thankful you are awake, Derrick⦠I was so afraid we were going to lose you," She whispered to him and continued to kiss his forehead.
They were so wrapped up in each other that neither had noticed Amelia and Meredith standing outside the window of the hospital room.
