He feels alone as he stands in the crowd of celebrating people rushing about him. He tugs at his collar, feeling a noose tightening around his neck, and looking deathly grim. He glances at his compass and curses, his gold tooth glinting in the sunlight.
"Stop looking at yer damn compass, boy! It's not gonna change! Do I really have to translate it for ye again? Ye're smarter'n that, Jack!" Jack shakes his head, the feathers and beads dressing his long, black hair jangling. "By Gods, man, if ye're not gonna do something about it, I will!"
"Gibbs!" Jack calls, reaching for him, but Gibbs is already gone, shoving his way through the crowd. Jack swallows hard, then follows distantly. He doesn't want Gibbs doing what he's about to do, but he knows he has no choice. His world's falling apart regardless.
"STOP THE PARTY!" Gibbs bellows, and everybody goes instantly quiet. Even Jack stills. "WILL, YOU'RE MAKING A MISTAKE!"
The bride and groom stare at Gibbs, their eyes as wide and round as innocent calves'. His final decision made, Jack pushes through the crowd and reaches his first mate. "Gibbs, that's enough!" he commands, already hearing the swords and muskets being drawn. "Let them have their happiness."
"Jack?" Will calls.
Jack whirls around, and his heart aches as he looks into the eyes that haunt his dreams. "It's okay, Will. Honest, it is. We'll be goin' now."
"TH' HELL WE WILL!" Gibbs snaps. "If he won't tell ye himself, Will, I'll do it! He loves ye, and if ye marry this strumpet today, ye'll always regret it!"
"Why didn't you tell me?" Jack's heart soars as Will runs to him. "I love you too!" After a skirmish with the guards, the reunited lovers and their crew sail away into happiness.
The End
