Maybe there was another way to do this.
War to eradicate war did seem a bit extreme.
But peace talks never worked. Countries never followed the exact outlines of peace agreements. Celestial Being's armed interventions had made a tremendous impact on the world much quicker than any peace treaty ever had.
So, maybe they were doing good.
Well, of course they were doing good. So far they had managed to stop a few terrorist groups and they had even gotten the Real IRA in Ireland to announce a ceasefire! That would end four hundred years of strife on the island – an amazing feat for anyone to accomplish.
An event some would call, "a miracle".
But, still. The intervention in the Moralian Republic had caused an estimated minimum of five hundred lives. Those weren't estimates that made Sumeragi jump for joy. That was a lot of people dead. By her orders.
She always followed the principle of the greatest effect for the least amount of casualties.
Five hundred plus fatalities was just what it came down to. There was nothing she could do about it.
That didn't stop the memories. Her mistaken calculations. The death that mattered above anything else in the world. Emi–.
No. She wasn't going to think about that.
Sumeragi poured herself a glass of wine – that was the reason she'd come here after all. She needed to calm herself down and alcoholic drinks usually did the trick. They helped her to forget. To run away. To leave her mistakes and guilt behind her.
Though in the morning, the hangover did nothing to stop them from coming back.
The five hundred lives was just a price to be paid. If Celestial Being could really eradicate war, no one in the future would even have to contemplate whether or not to risk lives like this. A tactical forecaster wouldn't even be needed!
She told those words to herself multiple times throughout missions like this one with Moralia. Intoxicating herself helped, too. But she could never get the nagging voice out of her head. The one that tormented her with the innocent lives of the ones killed. The one that constantly reminded her of her mistakes. Of Emilio.
Sumeragi took a large drink of her wine.
What Celestial Being was doing was right. She knew that deep down in her heart. She just had to get rid of the guilt.
Another sip of her wine and let herself forget…
A/N: Never thought I'd be writing a drabble about Sumeragi. Well, it was always a possibility. I mean, after Feldt, Sumeragi is my favorite female. In other news, I got the first Gundam 00 novel the other day. Score one for me.
