DIVIDE AND CONQUER

With Cesare in France, Alexander turns to Ascanio to seek out the murderer of Cardinal Antonelli, and shows sympathy to a mistress who comes forward to confess her sins with the Cardinal. Vanozza grows weary of Rodrigo's fickle indiscretions, and despite his pleas for her to stay, she leaves the Vatican, taking Giovanni with her. In France, Cesare follows Cordoba's suggestion to defeat Marche before Naples instead and commissions Leonardo DaVinci for construction of additional weaponry; Cesare leaves for Marche and Lucrezia requests her own commission of Leonardo – a painting. While in route to Marche, Cesare reveals the Borgia plans to take all the Italian states, and the condottieri discuss their fear of his power. Ascanio manipulates the accusation of Cardinal Adriano de Carneto and proposes Francesco Todeschini as replacement, which pleases Rodrigo. Charlotte stumbles upon the painting of Lucrezia and confronts her about her relationship with Cesare. While Lucrezia believes she is jealous, she reveals she fears both her and Louise being discarded. She threatens to expose their relationship, if that happens. In Rome, Della Rovere pays a visit to Caterina Sforza, who divulges her mistakes in publicly opposing the Borgias. Using this knowledge, Della Rovere advises Todeschini how to earn the Borgia's trust as Cardinal. Following Della Rovere's admonition, Todeschini befriends Alexander and expresses his own support of the expansion of the Borgia name, suggesting a potential ally in Alfonse D'este of Ferrara. In France, Lucrezia convinces Charlotte of her loyalty, but after an intoxicating evening, she gives her a lethal dose of poison. Cesare returns triumphant from Marche to find Charlotte in the fountain, an apparent drowning.
