George Milton

Throughout my life, I met all sorts of people

All of them had their regrets

I remember the man from Weed

Forced to live like a caged bird for two years after stealing from the local grocery store

"To this day, I don't know what I was thinking," he told me

I had no answer for him, because I didn't know either

Then there was the Indiana man whose love of whiskey lost him his wife

The woman who had lost her child in a crowded street

And never saw him again

The father who had exiled his son from the family for falling in love with the wrong girl

All of them had their regrets

But none like mine

You're probably wondering what I could have possibly done that was worse than the events I just described

Well, I'll tell you

The one thing I regret

More than anything else

Is the day I killed my best friend

I can still feel the cold steel of the gun in my hand

Still hear the echo of the sound it made

And though I've been told that I did the right thing

I still have my regrets
