Under the Mistletoe
Harry Potter stood patiently by the doors to the Great Hall as he waited for his best friend Ron Weasley to detangle himself from Lavender Brown. The last feast before the Christmas holidays had been exceptionally good this year, and Ron and Lavender were currently engaged, presumably, in a celebratory snog. Finally, however, Ron got up from the bench and came over to him.
"C'mon Harry, what are you waiting for?" Ron grinned as he continued out of the hall. "Where's Hermione?"
"She said she was going to the library." Harry replied, catching up. "We'd better go and get her, you know what she's like; it'll be morning and the train will have left before she looks up from whatever she's reading."
"Yeah," Ron laughed.
No one had been more surprised than he when Hermione was completely fine with, and even supported, his relationship with Lavender. Then again, she had been spending an almost alarming amount of time in the library this year, so, as Ginny was so fond of pointing out, she hadn't seen the 'full, nauseating extent of their common room interactions.' Whatever that meant.
The corridors were deserted as Harry and Ron walked to the library, as the school was still feasting. They rounded a corner to the stretch of corridor that lead to the library and froze.
Hermione and Draco Malfoy stood before them, kissing passionately. A bunch of mistletoe hung high in the rafters of the ceiling.
A portrait nearby coughed loudly and pointedly, and they sprang apart.
Malfoy sneered at them as he approached and made sure to push Ron with his shoulder as he passed, heading presumably to the dungeons. Hermione came over to them, her cheeks flushed.
"I got my book, let's go to the common room." She went around them and began to climb the staircase. Harry and Ron remained where they were, stunned.
"Wha- what was that?" Harry stuttered. Ron shook his head as though to clear it.
"It was probably just a really strong bunch of mistletoe, and Hermione would rather just pretend it never happened."
Harry grasped at the explanation, as though it would save his life. "Yeah, you're right."
But as he laughed and joked with Ron, Hermione, Ginny and Neville in the common room that night, Harry couldn't help but feel that something was bothering him about what he and Ron had seen, but whatever it was, it lingered just out of reach.
It wasn't until he was in bed and just about to fall asleep that it came to him, and he sat up so fast his neck screamed in protest.
"Ron!" he hissed. "Ron, wake up!"
"Huh?" Ron awoke, and sat up, squinting at his best friend from his four poster. He looked as bewildered as Harry felt. "What is it, Harry?"
"Ron- Hermione and Malfoy they weren't under the mistletoe…"
Harry took a deep breath and forced the words out:
"…They were in front of it."
