Shouto made sure to be quiet when he closed the door behind him. When he makes his way down the halls, his footsteps are soft and his feet expertly navigate the halls without finding a single creaky floorboard. It's practically muscle memory at this point. He wouldn't be nearly as cautious as of late, but he can't deal with his father right now. He has an important conversation to attend to, and he can't let the bastard know about it.
Shouto strains his ears as he goes for the deep, booming voice, or any hint that he's not alone in this house. Halfway to his room, he pauses entirely, not even breathing when he thinks he hears the slightest thing. After this, he's progressively calming down as he manages to reach the relative safety of his bedroom. The old man must be out on patrols. Hopefully, he'll have some time to be alone... Hopefully he'll be lucky.
He shuts the door behind him with a relieved sigh and sets his backpack on the bed, the jacket of his uniform following suit right after. He sits at his desk and pulls his sleeves up, finally able to read the message he had been waiting for all day: the message from his soulmate.
"So I just blocked and reported my dad irl."
He let loose the barest of smiles. He writes back, "What'd he do?"
"He told his work friend about the One Time with the door."
"Did you call him out back?"
"I was too embarrassed, it was one of his hero coworkers! Like one I've admired for a really long time and is supposed to be my teacher soon!"
Ah... Shouto's soulmate had mentioned a long time ago that his father works at a hero school. Maybe he can ask which? No, he can't afford to get his hopes up. He'd get excited waiting for the answer, only to be disappointed when he's at a school across the country... Besides, even if this person goes to U.A. and even if he has the opportunity to meet his soulmate, he can't. Not with his own excuse of a father hanging over him like a prison warden. If he even found out about Shouto talking to his soulmate again, there'd be hell to pay. He can't bear to imagine what would happen if he met him...
So they both stay in anonymity. For both of their sakes... But that doesn't mean he can't love- no, care for him from afar.
Love... Doesn't feel right. He can't afford it, and he's not even sure if he knows what love is anymore... If at all. To care for someone... That goes for anyone. He cares for Fuyumi. He cares for Natsuo, as distant as he's been ever since he moved. He cared for his mother before The Incident.
See? There's enough of a bond for him to risk communicating, but not enough so he risks losing it all. Simple. But not really. It's still kind of a mess... But a mess he wants to hold onto.
He's brought out of his thoughts and back into the real world when he feels more words being written. He can't help but chuckle at what he reads while he responds.
"Well, I'm gonna be meeting my teachers tomorrow, so vengeance is mine!"
"I sure wouldn't want to cross you."
And hopefully he doesn't have to cross paths with him... At least, that's what Shouto tells himself.
