"I love you," he claimed desperately, grasping for some sort of hook, something to keep her listening.
"I know," she admitted quietly, in a morose tone of surrender. "But I can't."
He grimaced. His lips quivered as if perhaps he would protest or begin to sob. He didn't. He just stared at her expectantly with large, pleading eyes. It was the end, he knew it. They both knew it long before now. It had just taken them some time to realize they did.
"Bye Eric," she whispered, letting her lips touch his face one last time. The kiss didn't linger- she swiftly put back on her jacket and exited the room.
"Bye Melissa," he breathed as the door clicked behind her.
He knew that on this raining afternoon, she'd drive to her house and call him to come over. They'd snuggle up together and watch some hideously mushy movie while sipping hot coca and whispering sweet nothings. He would tell her how much he loved her and to him, she'd say the same.
On this raining afternoon, Eric would be left alone in this dingy motel room, thinking about his time with her. He'd think about what it had meant to her, or if it had meant anything at all. He would nurse his broken heart and wonder is perhaps he had broken hers. He would wonder if she loved him, but sadly, he knew the answer to that. She was with him, Eric was alone- it wasn't a mystery.
