The Story of Vic
He was the king of coolness.
He was in class 5-501, school P.S. 376, popularity level: highest
He was the best of the best, he ruled everyone from the 5th graders to the kindergarteners.
When he spoke, everyone listened, when he ordered everyone obeyed.
His name was Victor.
It all started in March,2010. We were all in the lunchroom living our lives normally, when Deloris Soto came up with the late-breaking news.
"Vicki likes Victor!" she exclaimed/sang
"Who the heck is Victor?" I turned to my best friend who was beside me as always, her face a blank canvas.
"You don't know who Victor is?" Deloris asked
"Obviously not" I answered
She was about to answer when Mr. Rubio took us outside.
Deloris stood with Anani Santos and Kennedy Brown, people whom I did not admire, so I stood opposite of them, by the door.
I was just watching the runners when Vicki spoke
"That "she said "is Victor"
She was talking about a boy nearest to us wearing a white T-shirt and green shorts, running the fastest
He was a tad bit darker than I and was of reasonable height, which obviously meant he was shorter than me. He ran to a giant group of entourage who all congratulated him for winning.
I studied him
"I can see why you like him, but you just can't"
"Can't what?"
"Like him, I mean it's cute that you like someone cool for once but you can't like him"
"Why not?"
"No offense Vicki, but he is way too cool for you. He is not gonna like you back."
She said nothing.
I think everyone knows the story of Washington D.C. so we'll skip it.
So anyway, around came the time of prom and graduation.
I had become friends with Victor and had full conversations with him, while Vicki still had yet to utter a word to him. (I don't think that the WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM! counts)
So here was one of those conversations:
We were outside and Victor took the win of yet another race, and as he went to meet his posse he bumped into me.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, and whoa. Watch where your going Speedy" I remarked
He smiled (which rarely ever happened, since he and I were the most serious people in 376) and bumped into my shoulder as he sauntered away.
Vicki was standing there as always yet her face was in a tight grimace.
She was jealous and I knew it.
Now is the most surprising event in "The Story of Vic".
A few days before prom my friend Valerie Suarez from 501 came to my class's table and asked if I liked Victor. I shrugged
"I'm gonna go ask if he likes you" she said. I shrugged again. He's probably gonna say no. I thought
When Valerie came back, I asked her what he had said
"He said "she replied "Yes, a tad"
