AN: [I do not own APH or any of the characters. Also this is my first fanfic, hope y'all enjoy]
She had gone through a handful of them in her long life, both nation and human names. When she had still been just a child living in her father's tribe her name had been Nemere. It was a good name, neither masculine nor feminine, simply meaning swift or quickly which fit the way she rode on her horse. The name had lasted her centuries, even after her father had disappeared and she was left to be a nation in her own right. It had lasted the change from nomad to a settled community.
Her king though had then converted to Christianity and the name she had used as a pagan nomad had to be thrown away. This time she would be Daniel, most assumed she was male already and she would not correct them and risk losing her place on the battlefield. It was almost odd knowingly hiding the truth from everyone, though she did have small slips from time to time. Even then her secret in general was able to remain a secret and Daniel she was able to stay. Five hundred years the name lasted her till after being taken over by the Ottomans and it eventually being revealed that she was a woman.
With the truth of her gender now known once again she had to change her name. Erzsebet would take the place of Daniel, keeping her Christian naming in honor of her long dead king who had converted her. This is the name that would follow her to the Austrian household and even through to modern times. Every time her name was changed it felt like she was changing as well, from a young nomad warrior to a grown woman who had survived much and now lived in peace and stability. Erzsi did sometimes wonder if Nemere saw her now if the young girl would recognize her as what she would eventually become.
Nemere, Principality of Hungary, Kingdom of Hungary, Daniel, Ottoman and Royal Hungary, Erzsebet, Kingdom of Hungary, Austria-Hungary, Hungarian Republic, Hungarian People's Republic, Third Republic of Hungary.
Magyarorszag, Erzsebet Hedervary.
So many names and so many pieces that had come from all the years and surviving each change. It had been almost five hundred years since she had become Erzsebet and given that was how long she usually kept a name she wondered if some change was coming again. If it did who would she become and how similar would this new version of her be to the woman that she is now?
