notes: (04/23/07) Pre-series series-metaphor drabble. ManHunt on a moonless, nearly starless night.
Sora scowled at the shoreline, squinting into the places where black overlapped black and then some. Not that it made a difference. Nothing sharpened, nothing illuminated; it was a childish reflex, at best. Beside him, Riku smirked. But he could only tell that because of the way the older boy held himself, arms folded and head cocked. It was sort of the same way he knew where the water started and the cliff face ended--half by starlight, half by heart.
"Chicken, Sora?"
"Shove it, Riku. You know the beach is the suckiest place for ManHunt. I can't see a damned thing."
"Isn't that the point?"
"That I can't see or that you don't want to be found?"
"Ooh, snappy." SMACK. "Ow! Haha. No seriously, Sora, don't be scared."
"I am not. There's just a lot of sand for you to make use of and I hate it when you make me look stupid."
"Now why would I do that?"
"I dunno. Me running blind circles around you when you're right there? Think about it."
"Huh. If I told you that you always look stupid anyway, would it make you feel better?"
"Maaan--"
"C'mon Sora. You know you could find me if you really wanted."
"...How you figure?"
"Well, who knows me best?"
"..."
A warm hand found his shoulder and squeezed. "You and I both know you don't need your eyes to track over this beach," Riku seemed to be speaking into his temple, making his eye twitch lightly. "If you had any sense, you would know that your real sight is here," a second hand patted the place directly over his heart. "Think like me. Find me. It's that easy."
"Riku..." Sora started, suddenly unsure.
"Come after me," Riku insisted, withdrawing. Then, without any warning, the world went flying in every direction and Sora almost missed the scratching sound of his friend scuttling away, into the shadows. He hit the turf with a grunt, swearing under his breath because he'd been blindsided. And all around, it seemed, Riku's retreating laughter danced on the wind.
Catch me.
