The following is a full transcript of NPR's interview with War Prince Alloran, conducted by Derek Rodriguez on Tuesday, August 7, 2012.
DEREK: For all of our listeners, the audio was translated courtesy of equipment provided by Raytheon and Cisco Systems. Professor Alloran, thank you very much for giving NPR this time.
ALLORAN: Not a problem!
DDEREK: Professor, as you know, it's been five years since nearly all of the Animorphs were seen. Is there any chance they are still alive?
ALLORAN: I know as many details as you know regarding the heading of the Yeerk ship the Animorphs stole. That being said, I do feel that the odds are favorable regarding their survival. Our galaxy is full of surprises, and many worlds in it are capable of supporting life forms like ourselves. There are also several nomadic peoples who roam the galaxy as merchants, such as the Ongachic and the Dayang, and those peoples are very friendly to refugee species. However, other species, like the Skrit Na, would be less welcoming. If the Skrit Na had found the Animorphs, however, they would use them as hostages in negotiations with the United Nations of Earth.
DEREK: Speaking of the United Nations, there has been a lot talk that the United Nations has grown too powerful since the end of the Yeerk War. Mitt Romey has discussed withdrawing from the new treaty negotiations.
ALLORAN: Humanity is very unique as far as maintaining sovereign nations or tribes for as long as it has, particularly considering the sheer population of Earth. The Andalites have never encountered a species quite like yours. That being said, I support increasing the powers of the United Nations, particularly if Earth is going to maintain trade with non-humans. I teach the Galard language at the University of Nebraska, and the first thing I discuss with my class is how the Galard language is used to bridge very different cultures, particularly space-fairing ones. Humanity has a lot to gain by going to the stars.
DEREK: Have you had any involvement with the "Voyager" project?
ALLORAN: I am barred by the Andalite government from working on any technology transfer project. But-I am very impressed with the speed that humanity grasped new technologies and concepts. Some of our technology came from salvaged Skrit Na vessels.
DEREK: What other sorts of limitations have the Andalite government imposed on you?
ALLORAN: Only the one mentioned, and I helped draft the original policy! (Laughs)
DEREK: Do you still maintain close ties with your homeworld?
ALLORAN: I do with my children. My people, and my former wife, still regard me as an abomination. Our culture places a very strong emphasis on appearances, and I broke the ultimate rule regarding appearances, being captured alive. It's seen as a sign of weakness. But my children and I are still close. My son is even getting the clearances to bring his family to Earth.
DEREK: Would he live with you in Lincoln?
ALLORAN: Yes. Every university on Earth offered me a teaching position. I chose to come to Nebraska because of the climate, and the University was willing to purchase a pastureland for me. I have no doubt that he would join me here.
I have to say, also, that I am amazed at how kind humanity is regarding both my people and the Yeerks who have resettled here. My people would not have offered such kindness to a vanquished foe. We all are truly grateful for human kindness.
DEREK: And with that, we'll take a break for our sponsors. Join us, listeners, as we will be joined after the break by former UN Secretary General Kofi Anan.
