An oceanic fog moved through the abandon streets of the dock sector. The sun was just rising and coated the area in a bloody glow. Bodies were strewn throughout the streets. Some covenant, most human. Nothing moved save for a squad of grunts squabbling over a human body. One in red armor, presumably the leader, barked the rest away as he tore into the thigh.
"First to eat, first to die."
A bullet tore a fist-sized hole into the grunt's methane tank and caused an explosion that knocked the rest of the grunts on their feet. Half of the leader grunt was launched into a nearby car, while the other half was atomized.
A second bullet drove through a grunt's abdomen and embedded itself into the asphalt. The third bullet hit it's target in the face and threw the grunt into a 180 degree spin.
The grunts had found the direction of the incoming fire and began to return fire, but by the time the fifth grunt hit the ground the pack panicked and ran away down a side street.
A brown shape bounded from the second-story window of a five-story hotel at the opposite end of the street and landed in a pile of rubble. The barrel of an M99 rifle stuck out like an antenna from the figured as it picked its way through the detritus of war.
The fog began to recede as the sun drew closer to it's daily apex, and the battlefield could be seen more clearly. The sun reflected of the purple grunt blood and caused an odd aura of light to be shone on the walls of the buildings. The rest of the road was black with coagulated blood, both human and covenant. The figure itself appeared to be caked in dark spots. It looked around itself and sighed. He looked up at the sky and could barely pick out UNSC cruisers in the atmosphere. Three weeks ago he was enjoying shore leave on earth with the war as far from his mind as it could be. Now as far as he was concerned he was one of the last humans in the city.
"No use cryin' over spilled milk"
He picked his his way through the rubble and and scouted for a new hiding place. More would come soon and he planned on staying alive for a little bit longer.
"Never thought I'd die in New Mombasa"
