Bonnie Bennett - the witch that was supposed to know all the answers.
Jeremy Gilbert - the Hunter who loses everyone he loves.
A match made in Heaven? Course it wouldn't be that easy.
"Jeremy, have you heard from Bonnie?"
Jeremy was sitting on the couch playing video games - or rather holding the game controller and staring at the blank television screen, something which had become a sort of extra curricular activity in the Gilbert House this summer - when his older sister's voice interrupted his stare. He turned his head to see Elena standing in the doorway with a bag balanced on one shoulder and a navy blue suitcase waiting just behind her in the hall. Her dark brown hair was straight per usual and her dark eyes probing. She wore a pair of blue jeans and a grey sweater over a white t-shirt paired with a pout that could only be that of a girl missing her best friend. He, being a good brother, - or maybe friend? he honestly couldn't remember - lied.
"No, I haven't."
"If she's late-"
He stood from his post on the couch, relinquishing his controller and abandoning it on the cluttered coffee table to walk over and hug her shoulders. "She'll make it." The words tasted bitter in his mouth, the tangy stench of lies. He knew she wouldn't be appearing.. at least not to Elena. "You better get going." He urged, nodding her to the door, but she looked nervous.
"Jeremy, will you be-"
"Elena, I'm alright. You can go." Jeremy responded, attempting to heap emotion into the words but they fell flat.
She sighed, hugging him again. "Okay, Jer." She offered him a gentle, sisterly smile, and then opened the door and left.
He didn't watch her go. He was relieved to be able to stop acting. Everything was wrong and Elena didn't know it. She was happy and excited and going to college. Bonnie hadn't wanted to ruin it. "When are we going to tell them?" He asked the empty room, frustration mounting. Keeping this secret was killing him. Probably because the secret itself was ripping his insides slowly apart.
Then she was there again, in front of him. Bonnie was standing close enough to touch, but Jeremy knew all too well that if his fingers reached out to caress her smooth skin he would feel nothing but the air. "Soon." Her face was torn.
"Soon?" He repeated, eyes growing wild with some emotion even he couldn't identify. He was mad, yes, mad that he had to lie, but he was sad. He was truly sad. Every part of his body wanted to reach out, to hold her, for this to be real, to take back every mistake they'd made and be together. But now it was too late.
She nodded, frowning. "Jeremy, are you alright?" Her hand flinched at her side, but it stayed put. First instinct had been to comfort him, hug him, or hold his hand, or something, but she knew any action she made would make him feel worse. "Stupid question."
"Yeah." It was a breath, a sigh. "What am I going to say?"
"The truth." She answered almost automatically.
He barked out a laugh. "Oh, by the way Elena, I lied. Your best friend died bringing me back to life, came back for graduation and then made me tell you she was at her mom's for the summer?"
Her eyes glistened. "Jeremy, I know you're mad, but -"
"There is no but, Bonnie." His voice caught in his throat around her name. "You're dead."
She was silent, staring at him for a long moment. "I did this because I love you Jeremy." The words were barely audible.
He shook his head. "I know. That's what hurts the most."
