"I never really stood a chance with you did I?" His hard voice spoke from behind her.

Emma turned around quickly. "Luis?" She bit her lip confused on how this shy quiet boy was suddenly looking at her with such anger in his eyes.

"I never really stood a chance with you did I?" Luis repeated his fists clenched at his sides. "For you years you were crushing on Caleb; then when you finally told him how you felt; and he turned you down; you never once thought that …." He couldn't go on. His jaw clenched. "When Jordan came to school that first day; and I saw how your eyes lit up when you looked at her …. I knew that once you got over your silly childish girlish crush on Caleb that you would choose Jordan to have a crush on. I never really stood a chance with you!"

"Luis; I ..." Emma eyes grew teary at the sight of the broken boy in front of her. "I'm sorry." She swallowed. She knew exactly how Luis was feeling right now …. it was how she felt when she finally found the courage to finally ask Caleb out; fully knowing that he was going to turn her down.

Luis softened. His fists still remained clenched at his sides. "I'm sorry that I couldn't handle being rejected with class and grace as you did Emma." His chest hurt. "Please don't say 'let's be friends' … and try for a quick easy friendship with me like how you found with Caleb." He shook his head. "I need time. I need time to get rid of these feelings that I still hold for you Emma." He took a deep swallow breath. "I just had to finally get this out of my system."

Emma silently watched him as her arms wrapped around her waist.

Luis nodded firmly. He turned and walked quickly away.

Emma watched him go before bowing her head. She couldn't believe that she was the type of person whom truly hurt someone else. She couldn't believe that she was like her father. Her shoulders moved inwardly as she tried to draw deeply inside herself.
