Summary: This is an AU. Merthur is important. Merlin restored magic to Camelot after Arthur died with the help of Queen Gwen and died of an assassination from being made court sorcerer. (Completely disregard the last part of Season 5 where Merlin is an old man in the future.) But he remembers nothing of what happened when the gang and he are reincarnated as children. Eventually, Arthur and a select few do.
People who do remember: Arthur, Gwen, Morgana, Gwaine, Lancelot, Gaius, Morgause, and Elyan (because I can).
Prologue: Make Way for the Kings
"Isn't he just the cutest?"
"That he is."
"We'll have to give him a name soon, but there are just so many! Which one should we chose darling?"
"Whichever one you feel okay with saying for the rest of your life dear."
"… You're not being helpful."
Uther Pendragon and his wife Ygraine looked down fondly at their baby boy who was cradled in her arms. He was only about a month and a half old and his head already bore light blond wisps of hair. Looking into his cerulean blue eyes, Ygraine got an idea.
"How about we call him... Arthur. Arthur Pendragon." She said his name slowly, liking the feel of it on her tongue. "It fits him doesn't it?" she asked her beloved.
Uther responded with a wide smile, "Indeed it does."
Balinor looked through the glass window at his son. The son that his wife had died to bring into this life. He entertained the thought that he should hate the child for doing so but that would be completely illogical and petty.
About an hour later he was still staring at the babe in deep thought when suddenly, his son opened his eyes. Balinor's breath hitched at the site of them.
Blue, the exact replica of Hunith's lovely eyes which expressed so much kindness and emotion. 'Oh Hunith, I… We, will always remember you…
All three of us.'
And speak of the devil, his little princess came running towards him now.
"Morgana, what have I told you about running down the halls?" he strictly told the four year old.
She looked down sheepishly at her shoes and said in a quiet voice, "Not to."
"That's right. But I'll let it slide this time." He swung her up in his arms playfully so she could see her new baby brother, listening to her giggles at him doing so. "Now, have a look at our new family member."
She pressed her hands against the glass and her eyes widened in delight. "What's his name papa?" she turned to him and he looked at the blue of her eyes, comparing it to his son's deciding that it was just a bit cloudier than the babe's. He chuckled at her cuteness.
"Merlin."
