DM Margo and the Trouble with Bulls

It was a fine spring morning, and Gru had something to tell his three daughters Margo, Edith and Agnes. He showed them a leaflet he'd picked up from the superstore recently.

''Oh Girls, look at Dis leaflet'' he said ''There's a country fair in Freedonia soon''. ''So how about we check it out?'' ''Oh Yes!'' the girls said in unison. ''Eet's at de weekend'' Gru added. ''So dat's tomorrow. It'll be lovely and sunny too''. ''Can I wear my new red jacket?'' Margo asked ''It'll shine so nice in the sunlight''. There was so much excitement that night, no one slept a wink.

Next morning, the Gru family set off to Freedonia in Gru's airship. When they arrived, the entrance to the fair was crowded! ''Make sure that we don't lose each other'' Lucy warned the girls. They followed their parents around the different stalls.

Something on one of the nearby stalls caught Margo's eye. She stopped to read the sign. It read in big bold capital letters ''PAITNING COMPETITON, WIN A FABULOUS PRIZE, JUDGING AT 3 'o' CLOCK''. ''Can I enter this painting competition please?'' she begged Gru.

''Sure you can Margo, go for it'' Gru said, quickly handing over some money so she could pay to let herself in. The judges of the competition handed everything she would need. A canvas, a pallet, some paints, a paint brush, some water to clean the brush and an easel.

Then Margo set off around the Freedonia fair. She came to a spot in the Centre of the little town where she'd eaten some cheese and nearly become engaged to a boy called Niko.

Margo set up her painting equipment. She hadn't been painting for very long when she saw what she thought looked like a cow, only it was big and black with big horns and its head and there was a ring through the nose too.

It made a loud growing noise when it saw Margo and snuffled towards her. ''Hang on, that's not a cow!'' Margo gasped ''that's a bull and…'' she remembered that she was wearing a new bright red jacket. ''Bulls hate red!'' Margo wailed.

She quickly grabbed her things and ran for her life. Margo raced into a field where the gate was open. The bull ran in after her and after being chased one lap around the entire field, Margo ran out of the gate and quickly shut him behind her.

Margo stood there panting and her heart pounding. It really had been quite a close thing. Just then a farmer ran up. ''Did a bull just pass here?'' he gasped. ''Um yeah, one just chased me all around this field'' Margo said, rather feebly. ''I just shut the gate to trap it''.

'Oh great, thank you, young lady!'' the farmer said in delight ''That's my bull and this is the field he belongs in and I can see why he chased you. You're wearing a red jacket and he was after that because bulls hate red!''.

Margo just chuckled nervously. ''Well what's your name young lady?'' the farmer asked. ''Margo'', Margo replied. ''Well Margo. To show you how grateful I am for you finding my bull and bringing him back to his field. Here's a little something for you''. He handed Margo a $5 dollar note.

''Oh thank you'' Margo said. Now that the bull was out of her way at long last. She could get on with finding something to paint. Just then Margo had a brainwave. She could paint a picture of a bull!

When her painting was dry and finished. Margo took it to where the judging was to take place. ''Nice and simple and very neat'' the judges said, sounding very pleased with it. Then they said ''You win first prize!'' to Margo's delight.

They presented her with a little box filled with tubes of paints and brushes. ''Thank you'' Margo said for the second time that day. ''I'll have lots of fun with these. That's for sure''.

''Perhaps being chased by a bull worked out all right in the end after all'' Margo thought on the way home ''It helped me to win a competition!''
