Halfway to her car Scully starts counting how many beers she's snagged off Doggett, but doesn't want to return. She leans her head back and stares lazily at the clouds. A bridge crosses canyons, she thinks. She knows she's not so far from one, if only she could gather courage spare to climb towards it.
"How many was it?" she asks.
His voice comes from behind her, as she knew it would. "Enough."
Scully smiles savagely to herself. She's drunk, she thinks, she can hurt him.
"I shouldn't love you," she says. "I can't."
He doesn't seem affected at all, and she wonders why. "You're drunk," he says softly.
"Yes," she replies.
"Why did you come here?"
She shrugs. "A port in a storm."
"Will you stay?"
Scully turns to face him. His expression is indecipherable. "Are you offering?"
"You're welcome here."
"I know."
They stare at each other. Around them, the dark night moves.
