Five hours into the night and they're still trying to talk to each other. Much of their thoughts are left to silence. Scully's voice is raw, and Doggett wonders if that's because she's been trying to talk so much or because she's holding back unwanted tears.

Five minutes later Doggett wonders when they gave up on coffee and headed to beer instead. As he stares into the fridge out of his peripheral vision he can see Scully watching him.

"Wait," she says abruptly, and as Doggett turns to face her he feels her hand sliding up his shoulder and tugging at him, pulling him forward.

He falls towards her.

So easily.

Five seconds further and she's disappearing out the door, a brusque goodbye, a stumbling walk. Doggett stands at the door after she has closed it in his face, his brow furrowed.

For all Scully has said this night, she still hasn't told him why.
