This story is set during the Earth-Romulan War. The tale of the Enterprise runs from its development program in 2155 to it's presumed destruction in 2160. This story is consistent with given information of this time period.
During a Patrol mission with the UES Nimitz, Enterprise detected an anomaly and investigated. Radio contact was lost and Enterprise was presumed destroyed, only a handful of people got to escape pods or Minotaurs in time.
During the survivors debriefing it was reported that a fleet with technology that would enable the Romulans to win the war was en route to cheron, an important outpost.
The Actual destruction of the Enterprise was never seen, by anyone. Whether she was actually destroyed is one of the greatest questions ever posed. Enterprise is a fabled ship, and a fabled name.
In the final Recording of Starfleet History, it is said that the UES Enterprise was lost while successfully fighting off an "Outside" invasion force.
Whether the fleet was Klingon, Ferengi, Borg or another race was disputed for centuries.
If she were to ever be found, it would be a miracle.
Enterprise is, and most likely shall remain, a ghost ship.
