Emily pulled back the curtains and stared out at the world. It was white. The trees were covered, the cars dusted with snow, the puddles frozen over. The world was a glittering, beautiful sheet of white. It looked like sugar. Emily smiled, looking out at it, and thought about how wonderful this time was. As she turned away from the window, Matt came in and her smile grew.
He looked very handsome, to her, even though he was only dressed in his blue dressing gown. The fact that he was carrying a tray of tea and pancakes added to his attractiveness.
"Good morning," He said, leaning over and kissing her.
"Good morning," She replied, standing up from the window seat and moving to the bed and taking the tea he offered her, "So, what are the plans for today?"
"Today, we are going tree shopping" He said, taking a bite of one of his pancakes.
"But we already have a tree..."
"Yes, but not a real one. I want you to experience Christmas like you never have before" Matt announced and Emily laughed.
"Matt, I'm sitting in bed with a man to whom I am neither betrothed nor married, eating the most delicious concoction of flavour I have ever tasted and I work at a company which deals with dinosaurs and the future, honestly, I'm experiencing life like never before"
"We're still getting a real tree" Matt smirked.
So, later that Christmas Eve found Matt and Emily in the park where people were selling real trees.
"We really should have come earlier," Matt said, sighing, "All of the good trees are gone"
"Well, what about this one?" Emily pointed to a 6ft tree with branches stretching in all directions and leaves the colour of emeralds. Matt smiled.
"Trust you to find the best tree there is" He joked and Emily rolled her eyes.
"You simply need to use your eyes more"
"Matt, would you bring in the star?" Emily called out to the kitchen, where Matt was making eggnog. Emily couldn't have asked for a better...boyfriend. She found herself smiling at the word and she was still grinning to herself when Matt came back into the room.
"What are you smirking about?" He asked, handing her the star.
"I wasn't smirking, you smirk, the rest of us smile" She answered, taking it and grinning. She climbed up onto the arm of the couch and reached to place the star on top of the tree.
"Emily-" Matt began, urgently, but too late. Emily lost her footing and Matt automatically tried to grab her, causing them both to go crashing to the floor. After the initial shock, Emily looked down at Matt and they both began to laugh.
Emily made to move off him but Matt grabbed her by the arm and pulled him too her, kissing her.
"Emily, I think I'm in love with you" He said and she grinned back.
"I think the feeling is mutual, Matt, I love you too" She said, and he pulled her back into the kiss.
