It was by pure chance that Sydney happened to look up while twisting her neck around to relieve some of her building tension. She gasped at the sight outside of the station windows. The setting sun had made the evening sky come alive with a multitude of orange, yellow, and golden hues, and the sight was purely breathtaking. It also reminded her of what she wanted most in life.
Her pencil drooped from her fingers, almost hitting her desk. Her life had been so busy for so long that she seldom had time for anything she truly wanted to do any more, but the beautiful sunset reminded her of why she kept fighting for a day when she could do exactly what she wanted. She ached to have the time to be sitting out on a porch somewhere instead of being stuck inside this stuffy office and watching the sunset from the privacy of her own home.
One day she would, she vowed, and then an image came to her. As she was imagining how wonderful it would be to sit on her own porch and view such a spectacular sight of Mother Nature, Sydney saw a hand reach out, grasp hers, and give it a gentle squeeze. She sighed at the mental picture in her mind. It was so clear and felt so real that, for a moment, she could almost feel his flesh touching hers.
There was only one person in the whole world that Sydney would have chosen to sit beside her in such a peaceful, warming, and loving situation, and it was his voice that broke through her thoughts now. "Hey, Syd, whatcha thinking?"
Sydney blinked hard, returning her mind to reality and dismissing her wishful thinking as just that while another, deeper down part of her swore that, one day, she would make her dream happen. "Nothing, Gage."
Gage grinned at his partner from the desk next to hers. "Whatever you say, beautiful." He had seen her gaze grow wistful while she had been watching the sunset and knew very well that anytime Sydney said that she was thinking about nothing, she was, in truth, thinking about him. Whistling a merry tune, he set back to work. One day, whenever she finally stopped running and would allow him, he'd make her every wish come true, and from that day forward, he planned to spend every sunset with her in his arms.
The End
