Sasuke hates goodbye. It means the end of playtime or attention from Father, never signifying anything pleasant or whimsical.
Itachi says goodbye when he saunters off to ANBU, leaving his younger brother to play with dust motes alone, throwing awkwardly-aimed kunai at half-hidden shadows.
Father says goodbye when he tires of his son's inferiority and wishes to lay eyes upon something of greater stature, leaving Sasuke to form sloppy seals and singe his lips as he tries to taste the fire that will burn pride into his father's heart.
Mother says goodbye when going out to purchase groceries, leaving her child behind to trace broken hearts along the kitchen table grains and wish solemnly for her warmth's return.
Goodbye is never faithful and Sasuke cringes whenever the dreaded word is uttered, knowing he will be abandoned for an indefinite amount of time; knowing he will be suspended in lonely darkness before someone comes back – until someone remembers he's waiting.
As Sasuke waits, cursing goodbye and all its insinuations, he vows that he'll never, ever say that pungent word – and Uchiha Sasuke never goes back on such promises.
So when it is his turn to leave, pale hands wrapped around his torso and a roseate head buried between his shoulder blades – tears staining both his shirt and heart – he does not say the whispered adieu and merely says thank you instead because he's run out of words to say. He flees thereafter and she is forced to wait and wonder.
When he leaves again, this time gazing down at closed lids and blonde, blood-stained locks, Sasuke does not murmur a half-hearted farewell, but rather stares at the boy's half-parted lips until his eyes fail, the world becoming bleared and dark. He departs shortly after, making the other wait and pace.
And when he leaves a final, third time – his reflection staring back at him with a lingering question of why – Sasuke only turns away and stalks off. The reflection shimmers and disappears, forced to wait until the raven-haired ninja decides to come back.
It will be awhile, he knows –
– because Sasuke is still waiting as well.

A/N:
Introspective drabble on Sasuke and my newfound discovery of how he's never said "goodbye".Goodbye number one: Scene with Sakura. I just realized now that I was thinking of the curse-seal scene in the Forest of Death. So, yeah, just pretend she hugged Sasuke when confessing her undying love for him...haha.
Goodbye number two: Last scene with Naruto at the Valley of the End. Self-explanatory.
Goodbye number three: Sasuke essentially leaves 'himself'. It's symbolic in a way that Sasuke is leaving the past, all that he's been through, all he was. Sorry if it doesn't come off that clear.
