Another from the 'three sentence fic' challenge that turned out quite a bit longer than three sentences. Enjoy.
Sam Evans knew how to keep his girl happy. He liked surprising her, even if she claimed that she hated surprises. But every time her face lit up when he sang for her in Glee club, or appeared by her side to carry her books to class, he thought otherwise.
And for her birthday, he had the surprise of all surprises planned.
On the morning of her birthday, Rachel awoke early as usual. After being greeted with a stack of presents and a tasty vegan breakfast from her fathers, the doorbell rang. Rachel skipped to answer it, already in a wonderful mood.
She was greeted by her boyfriend standing on the top step. "Happy birthday baby," he said sweetly, and kissed her on the cheek. Sam handed her a huge bunch of bright yellow flowers and an envelope. "I thought you'd be too impatient to wait all day for your present."
Rachel pouted at the comment and playfully smacked his shoulder, then undoing the envelope as fast as she could. A hand drawn card fell out, with "HAPPY BIRTHDAY RACH" written in sparkly glitter glue with gold stars surrounding it. "I know gold stars are your thing, and you decorate all your school books with glitter, so I thought you might like it," Sam rambled adorably.
Rachel smiled widely and kissed him chastely. "I love it, thank you," she said, and opened the card. Her eyes went wide as she read the message. "You're taking me to Vegas?"
Sam grinned at his girlfriend, and flashed two tickets that he had been hiding in his pocket. Rachel examined them and squealed with excitement. "You're taking me to Celine Dion's show?" She jumped up and down with excitement and flung her arms around his neck. "Thank you, thank you, thank you," Rachel muttered as she showered kisses across his face.
Sam laughed and hugged her tighter. "Anything for you, baby."
After an exceedingly long road trip, through which Sam had suffered through many hours of "Rachel's Musical Mixtape", they finally arrived in Las Vegas. Rachel's nose was firmly planted against the windscreen as she took in all the sights around her. Sam just smiled and took her hand.
The show was in a few hours, and Sam and Rachel were getting ready in their hotel room. Or rather, Sam had been ready for over an hour, while Rachel was still occupying the bathroom. "Rach, we'll have to leave soon," he called out.
"I'm almost done," Rachel replied for the twentieth time.
But this time, she did emerge from the bathroom. Her hair was curled softly at the ends, and she was wearing a navy blue ballerina length dress. Rachel blushed when Sam approached her. "You look beautiful," he whispered.
They were finally taking their seats for the show, and Rachel was giddy with excitement. She could barely sit still as the patrons gradually entered the theatre. Sam just smiled adoringly at his beautiful girlfriend.
As the lights went down, Rachel squealed with anticipation and held Sam's hand tightly. Celine Dion entered the stage, and Sam was certain that Rachel cheered the loudest out of anyone. She was totally fixated on the stage.
But as she began to sing, Rachel turned to Sam. She kissed him on the cheek, and whispered "Best boyfriend ever." Sam grinned and wrapped his arm around her shoulder, as they settled down to watch the show.
