Nicias sighed a bit and his wings fluttered as a cool breeze brushed past him. After spending time in Ahnmik, he had gotten quite used to allow his wings to be shown while still in his human form. It had alarmed his peers at finds, and even his parents a little. Rei knew that Nicias hadn't changed his opinions of the falcons while he was in Ahnmik, but it was startling to see his only son with new falcon habits.
Nicias smiles a bit, as if he wasn't different enough. The shock of blue bangs that now famed his face made him stand out enough. His peers were wary of him because of his linieage, and flaunting his powerful didn't calm them. Nicias knew that he was always going to be different, and there was no point in trying to make others comfortable around him because it just wasn't going to happen.
Oliza would have been fine with it.
Oliza.
His breath caught up in his chest, Nicias tensed. Where was she now? Nicias sighed as he remembered, with Betia. He was fine with their relationship he supposed, but it still hurt. A dull throb haunted his chest when he thought about the wyvern he had grown up with.
The future that they could have had was tantalizingly sweet. Sugar coated and dipped in honey. It would have been perfect.
Nicias chuckled a bit at his own foolishness, well maybe not perfect. His grandmother would never stand for their union if they had… coupled. And what of their children? Would they be lost to Ecl? Would they be monstrosities – mixed with Cobra, Hawk, and Perigrine?
"I will never know…" He whispered, closing his eyes and pulling a strand of loose hair back behind his ear.
Maybe it was better that way.
But Nicias couldn't help but wonder, and regret.
Just to clear up any questions, this took place after the fourth book in the Kiesha'Ra series. I haven't read the fourth book, which is whyt his is AU-ish, and I don't plan on doing so. Not because I have anything against same sex relationships (Ha! Look at all my other stories), but that I feel like Amelia Atwater-Rhodes threw away her plot. With Oliza no longer taking the throne, how are the avians and the serpiente going to finnaly accept eachother? What was the point of making Oliza a wyvern when she was going to loose her wings?
So I suppose I might be alone in this opinion, but I think that Oliza should have ended up with Nicias, only to bring yet another species of shapeshifters farther into the mix. And what would happen if all the magics where to be combined?
