A Weekend With The Grissoms
I've known Gil and Sara for about 11 years now and last weekend, I had the pleasure of spending time with them at their home in San Fransico. Sara was on leave for a month to spend time with her husband while he was home from teaching and they were kind to invite my sister and I to spend Friday thru Sunday with them. They are not social people, yet they made us feel quiet at home in their incredibly clean yet modest home.
Gil likes to play Scrabble, Sara loves to play Singstar and Rock Band. I love it all, so we really had a time. My sister, Gina, wouldn't sing, but she laughed so hard she cried when Gil got up and sang "Brick House" and knocked it out of the park. Sara didn't do too bad either when she sang "Bad Romance". I must say that I kicked ass at "Love Shack" but Gil helped. We did a great duet.
Sara cooked her famous veggie lassagne and Gil made cheesecake. I ate. I normally love to cook, and I have made my friends many meals, but I really enjoyed watching their 'play' while they both worked in the large but simple kitchen. Gil talks the whole time he's cooking. He tells tales and tastes his food and let's you sample too. Sara is more in her on world when she's in the kitchen. She and Gil sort of move together in the way they worked and I thought they were adorable.
After dinner, we looked at photos from their small yet lovely wedding in Costa Rica. I'd been hurt not to be able to see them finally get married, but the photos thrilled me. Sara wore a simple summer dress of white and had a purple flower in her hair. Gil wore a very colorful shirt and white pants. They were both barefoot.
Sara told me about their honeymoon canoe trip (she was kind enough to share some of the juicy details with Gina and me) and how during a spur of the moment act of passion, Gil overturned the canoe.
We all sat in the den to watch "Casablanca" and have popcorn and beer. Gil and Sara always have beer in the kitchen.
Gina and Gil had a long discussion about some sort of butterfly that I never understood while Sara and I went for a walk with Hank. It cracked me up when Sara told me why she and Gil named their dog Hank. Sara had dated a 'Hank" briefly when Grissom was still battling his feelings for her and that Hank was a shank. Grissom sort of 'woke up' when he discovered Sara's boyfriend and he wanted to honor that. Well, that and Hank Aaron. I told Sara I thought the whole thing was strange, but she assured me that Gil is strange and it's ok with her. I laughed with her and agreed.
Sunday morning, we were all sitting around their table eating pancakes and talking when Gina asked Gil, "Why are you and Sara living apart? You love each other so much and get alone so well, I just don't get it."
Gil nodded and said to her, "I know it's strange and it is hard being away from my Sara, but in time, it will all make sense."
Gina and I looked at each other and rolled our eyes. Sara laughed and so did Gil.
We got ready to leave and gave them both a big hug.
Grissom whispered in my ear as I was giving him a big hug," I'll be in Vegas to sweep her off her feet soon."
"What does that mean?" I whipsered back.
"You'll see. You'll see." Grissom grinned.
I rolled my eyes.
As Gina and I drove away from the Grissom home, she turned to me and said "I never saw Sara drink a beer-did you?"
"No" I said
"SHE'S PREGNANT!" Gina yelled.
"That's what he meant!" I yelled back.
We spend the rest of the drive giggling and laughing about our wonderful, beautiful and strange friends. .
