Luz felt quite numb in his fox-hole - the confrontation he had had with Malarkey earlier was still fresh in his mind and body.
He didn't want to see him again for a while but only because he felt so damn guilty about what he had said.
He was so wrapped in his thoughts and the quite that had settled on the forest that he didn't notice someone had slipped into his foxhole until they curled up next to him. He jumped - damn, he was way out of it...
It was Malark...Luz could see the tear stains on his face, red streaks down pale cheeks.
Before Luz could clear the lump that had suddenly closed his throat, the red head spoke, "I'm sorry. I didn't...I didn't mean it, George. I didn't...!"
George could tell he was crying again - he looked straight ahead while Malarkey clung to his shoulder, his fingers digging in through the fabric. He was shaking.
"I'm sorry, too, Mal. I shouldn't of said those things -," but he was cut off.
"No, no - you were right. You were. And I just...I don't want you to leave...I don't won't the last words we have to be those!" Luz was fighting his own tears because he knew he was right - any one of them could be gone like that. Luz had seen it firsthand. He blinked furiously until the tears went away.
He had to comfort Don, not breakdown in front of him.
"Now you shush; quit upsettin' yerself. No good talkin' like that," the red head made a strangled noise, soft but pitiful, "No - I mean it. Even if it may be true, we don't need to think about it all the goddamn time." Luz spoke softly, gently, but meant every word.
Don had calmed a bit, George rubbing his back - soothing the other while creating warmth between them.
"I loved 'em, George...Very much."
Luz nodded slowly, he had thought as much. "I know, buddy, I know. Nothin' wrong in that. We all need some love in this kind of world, you know?"
Malarkey sniffed, still tightly curled to Luz's side. Silent but calm.
George kept his arm around him, watching his breath float away on the icy air. Even the wind had grown silent.
Luz would give anything to make his friend happy again - hell, he felt like he would do anything to bring any of their friends back to life.
The feeling of loss only seemed to grow with every life that was lost. One after another...
It wasn't fair, Don deserved love as much as anyone in their company...Maybe even more.
George was even willing to give that.
'Whoa - where did that come from? Fuckin' out of the blue...', his mind paused when he realized that his love for the red head may go beyond that of friendship...
"Damn," he whispered, the all-encompassing silence greeting it while Malarkey slept - first time in two days.
