Nightmares & Midnight's Dreams

Author's Notes:
Hello everybody! This is my first attempt at actually posting on so please bare with me as I learn my way around. This story sort of just ambushed me a few night ago and since the several other stories I'm working on are being fairly stubborn, I decided to go ahead with this one and see where it goes. I have a very loose outline of how I would like for this story to progress so there's plenty of room for change. Very little is ever set in stone when it comes to my writing so any comments or reviews this story gets from readers will likely play a huge part in how things end up going in the story as well as how often and how much I post in general. The first chapter is introductory which is why it's so short. So if you like it let me know and the chapters are bound to get longer. Like I said, this is my first go so it's really more of a 'getting my feet wet' sort of deal. My aim also of course to serve up some interesting stories featuring my favorite Detective and Medical Examiner duo! So without further ado... wait. Disclaimer: I do not own Rizzoli & Isles or any of its characters. They belong soley to Tess Gerritsen, TNT/Warner Horizon & Janet Tam... well...I uh...huh... anyway, here's the story.
The night was like any other. Piping hot pizza segregated unnecessarily, (they usually ended up eating each others side of it anyway) jokes, laughter,
conversation sparked by something entirely unrelated to the topic at hand and eventually whatever was on television lost the attentions of the two best friends as
they each gave way to sleep's call to oblivion. Every night for the past few years had gone relatively similar with the exception of course, of the late nights either one,
if not both of them, would get stuck with and the unfortunately occasional stints of mental and emotional turmoil that tended to arise during extremely trying cases,
which would more often than not, lead to the darker haired of the two women withdrawing for a while. Those things happened; they were bound to but for the past
few months their routine had gone on comfortably without any major interruptions. Then came tonight.
The two had fallen asleep stretched out on the couch, each at their own ends like they usually did but for some reason, tonight while the honey blonde M.E. slept
on peacefully, the raven haired detective tossed and mumbled into the encompassing darkness. Now, Jane Rizzoli was by no means a stranger to the absence of a
good night's sleep but usually the sleeplessness of those nights was caused by stress from whatever disturbing case she and the team were working on at the time.
On top of that, no matter what, Maura's house was typically the one place where she could actually get a full eight hours of sleep without much trouble. Actually, here
Jane rarely ever felt the need to double-check window locks or make sure all the blinds had been closed before sun-down, here she could just relax and enjoy the
company of her best friend. No deranged murderers or psychopathic serial killers could even dare threaten the comfort she felt in her friend's presence. So why can't
she sleep tonight? What could have possibly taken her from the bliss she held onto only moments ago? It wasn't a nightmare, far from it; but it did, among other
things, leave Jane breathless, sweaty and wide awake.
