Withering Snowdrops

Story by Apple Fairy

That day he was supposed to kill himself.

He looked out at the bustling grey city. The sounds of cars honking, of soft murmuring rang out in the air. It stretched endlessly out to the horizon, onward ever onward. So many people living their lives, so many stories, untold yet unfolding all the same. Kiku wondered what story he was missing, what was going on in that city. Millions of lives, living until the day of their death.

It all seemed so pointless to him. Living just to die.

The wind collided with him, where he stood, on the roof of the hospital. Outside the cage-link fence, with it behind him, and him on the ledge. He gripped that cold steel, and it bit into his fingers. He was barefoot, his shoes left neatly behind him, his suicide note lay on top.

For a moment, he thought of his family.

Of his big brother Yao and his younger brother and sister, Mei and Xaoi.

Would they cry?

It was then he thought of Yong Soo, and decided.

Today he would die.

He let go of the fence.

A moment, a silence fell. He had decided this long ago, had envisioned this ending. He would fall, yes, fall as if he was flying. He already knew his family would grieve, maybe they would blame themselves, but he had decided. Today he would die. Today he would fall.

Fall.

Fall.

As if he was flying.

Kiku closed his eyes, drowning in the noise of the city, the sound of the wind blowing, he preserved this moment. He inched his bare foot, toes curling over the edge.

Today he would fly.

He took in a big breathe, released it, and opened his eyes. The sky was blue that day, clear and beautiful. Looking up he spotted no cloud in sight, but then he saw it.

Something to the edge of his vision. Something not meant for a blue sky.

A small twinkle. Like a star. Kiku furrowed his brows, confused. Then he noticed it getting closer.

And closer.

And closer.

Like a falling star. Suddenly the sound of something falling, something loud and precise filled the air and it fell faster and faster, towards the hospital. Kiku's eyes widened, and he gripped the fence instinctively. It made impact, a big explosion, right behind him. The wind blew his hair, and looking behind him he couldn't believe his eyes.

What in the world?

When the smoke cleared, a man was lying there. The ground around him did not seem to be affected, which bewildered Kiku. Actually, this whole scenario was uncanny. What in the world was going on?

Kiku watched the man for a moment, and couldn't make out his features from where he stood. Suddenly, the resolution he had before melted away, and curiosity got the best of him. Carefully, slowly, he climbed back over the fence, the air so silent after such a loud noise. This moment felt delicate, and Kiku walked cautiously over to the strange man.

The first thing he saw were the wings.

White, pure wings that almost seemed to…glow? Kiku almost thought he was dreaming, I mean what was he seeing? An angel? Upon closer inspection he saw the rest of the man; shaggy blond hair, thick eyebrows, the white toga he wore. It was like something out of an old painting and Kiku had a hard time comprehending this moment. Was he dreaming?

But he could feel his chest hurt, after having rushed over to the man. Kiku wasn't in the best of shape seeing as he'd been bed-ridden for a good few months now. This pain assured him this was all real, so strangely real.

As Kiku kneeled next to the man he could hear the angel's soft breathing. Kiku, in contrast, was panting after how he overexerted himself. Their breath filled the air, Kiku not sure what to do now. It was a surreal moment, and the wind gushed past them again, howling sadly.

The angel began to stir awake.

Kiku felt himself freeze, his body on guard as the man's eyes fluttered open.

Oh, Kiku thought to himself, what beautiful green eyes.

The angel stared at him for a moment, curious, and then he frowned. The serene face turned into one of annoyance and he spoke.

"Would you stop," he said slowly, "with that incessant panting. What are you, a dog?"

"Wh-what?" Kiku asked, dumbfounded as the angel sat up. He reached out a hand then, touching Kiku's chest. A light shone, and he could feel something warm in his chest, flooding in him, like something cradling his heart.

It was something nice, like drinking hot cocoa after coming in from the cold.

The angel removed his hand, smiling to himself for a job well done.

"There; much better."

Kiku put a hand over his chest, his breathing better now. Still in shock over this whole situation, it was then he looked up at the strange man, those wings still framing him. At that moment, he saw the scrapes on his arms, bruises on the back of his legs already beginning to grow. The impact had painted him with those wounds.

"You're hurt!"

"What?"

Kiku was scrambling to get up then, rushing to the door that led to the roof. Looking behind him, he saw the bewildered look on the angel, but continued on nonetheless.

"I'll get some help! Wait here."

And before he could stop him, the door closed behind Kiku, a large clang filling the air. He frowned then, and sighed heavily.

Honestly.

"Honda? What are you doing out of your room?"

"Where are your shoes?"

"Honda?"

"There's no time for that now!"

Kiku rushed up the stairs as fast as he could, Dr. Edelstein and the nurse Miss Héderváry trailing behind him. His mind was a mess at the moment, so much to process but focusing on one thing. His sense of logic had left him, and he opened the door leading to the roof, presenting to them what he was worried about most at this moment.

"He needs help!" He said, his breathing already heavy again. Looking to the roof he saw the angel sitting there, cross-legged, a bored expression on his face. Like he was watching a particularly trite show, and wanted to be anywhere but here.

Dr. Edelstein and Elizabeta looked where Kiku had indicated. The doctor pursed his lips in disapproval, Elizabeta looking uncertain. Kiku was confused; the man was right there, why were they looking at him now, as if something was wrong with him?

"I-I'm not sure where he came from but he's hurt-"

"Honda."

The doctor looked straight at Kiku, his gaze hard, his voice stern. To Kiku, who looked at him with wide and confused eyes, he told him:

"There's no one there."

It felt like the world was crashing down then. With everything happening all at once, Kiku felt like a tidal wave had hit him. As if to add weight to this, the wind gushed past them again and it's then he noticed it didn't affect the angel at all. Not a single strand of hair on his head moved, not a single feather ruffled. Kiku felt like he was going to faint with how bizarre this scenario was. He could hear Roderich telling Elizabeta to help him back to his room, but he wasn't registering the words. His eyes were stuck on the winged man, who still wore that same bored expression, balancing his head on his hand. Kiku felt himself about to say something, anything he didn't really care, but instead the angel spoke.

"They can't see me, you know. Only you can."

Kiku felt Elizabeta's hand on his shoulder, telling him softly that they should go back, but his attention remained on what the angel was telling him.

"I know who you are. Kiku Honda, twenty-three years old. Currently residing in Kitayume Hospital. Why can only you see me?" He asked rhetorically, something Kiku couldn't ask unless he wanted to look like he had gone insane. He got up then, his walk steady and it's then he noticed his wounds were completely healed, like nothing had happened at all. Suddenly he was right in front of him, staring straight at him, Elizabeta beginning to turn Kiku away.

He has such piercing green eyes.

He smiled, but not a gentle smile. It was a mocking smile, something mean-spirited. His words were slow, making sure they would sink in, and yet still his wings framed him beautifully. It was the last image of the angel Kiku held onto in his mind, before he was forced back to his room. The image of his smile, his cruel smile as he spoke those words.

"It's because you're going to die soon."

That's it for chapter one! I hope you enjoyed it!

Hmmm I know it's pretty short but I mostly wanted to start us off with this scene. The next chapters should be longer, so I hope you look forward to them!

Thank you for reading!
