Poems in the Dark
Disclaimer: I don't own Inuyasha or any related characters. I don't even own the haiku format. I own NOTHING!!! Are you happy, you sadistic…ahem. Sorry. Read on…
This I came up with while thinking of what to do for Family Ties, and since at the end of the third chapter I mentioned Sesshomaru struggling with having emotions, I started thinking about that. Now, I was reading my English textbook, and I came across haiku. I thought, 'Let's write a fanfic about Sesshomaru writing haiku!', and so Poems in the Dark was born. Oh, I know the opening has holes big enough to drive Japan through, but I'll work on it. And the haiku is pretty bad…it's supposed to be plainer, but I thought this would work better…I'm babbling. Just ignore me and read.
It was a dark, rainy afternoon. Sesshomaru sighed. This torrent had lasted two whole days so far, with no signs of it ceasing. The trio had been forced to take cover in this cave, and, while dry, the cramped space was certainly getting on his nerves. Jaken and Rin were asleep in the back, but Sesshomaru couldn't sleep. Instead, to pass the time, he started writing. He didn't know where the words came from. They simply flowed from pen to paper, revealing what lay buried in his heart.
Dark and rainy day.
Trapped within confines of stone,
I wait for the sun.
It was good, but Sesshomaru felt mildly annoyed. Poetry was a sign of weakness. He was not weak. Still, the poem was there. He growled softly, balled it up, and threw it out of the cave entrance. Then he tried to sleep. A few moments later, a paper ball sailed into the cave and struck him on the nose. He almost shredded it, but thought better and opened the note. It was a poem, written in reply to his:
Better dry and cramped
Than outside in this weather.
I wish I were you.
Sesshomaru replied:
You don't know my heart—
My heart is locked up tightly
And no one has the key.
And so it began…a wet afternoon of shared poetry, thoughts, and feelings.
You have emotions
Hidden deep within yourself.
Let them out; be free!
---
Stranger in the dark,
Hiding outside in the rain.
What are your emotions?
---
My heart is wilder.
Emotion flows and changes
As a river does.
---
The child stirs, she wakes.
Our time is short, I must go.
Tell me who you are.
---
I will not tell you.
But my time, too, grows shorter.
Farewell, Lord Fluffy.
"What the—" Sesshomaru stared at the paper. No one called him Fluffy, except Rin. And he hadn't said who he was, either. He heard a rustling, and raced to the cave entrance.
"Wait! Who are you?" But there was no response, save for a shaft of sunlight piercing through the clouds. The storm was gone, and with it, his mysterious correspondent.
He never found out who it was, but he always kept the sheet of their shared poems close by. And every time he read the words, he felt something in his heart.
My heart is locked tight—
No emotions can leak out.
What then is this warmth?
The End
Pretty sweet, huh? I know it's short… The formatting of this story will probably look better on my computer than on but I will try to make it as close as I can. Please review this! Not enough people review what they read!
