prompt 07 for unloveyou: prove it cameron/chase
100 words

On her first day back at the hospital since leaving last spring, she notices a brightly colored box sitting on her desk in the ER.

With furtive glances around, she fingers the ribbon, casually sliding it off the box. She lifts the lid from the box and pulls out a small container full of sand.

No note, but she knows it's from Chase.

She sighs knowing he was reminding her of the summer they shared and the changes they said they would make together. But she's not quite ready to admit why she really came back, not even to herself.

"You were right."

Chase stops reading his book and looks up at her. "About what?"

"About us." Her eyes dart quickly to the chest of drawers, where earlier he had placed some of his clothing.

He saw the glance and waits.

"This is hard for me. I haven't really let anyone get close to me since my husband died." She shrugs her shoulders, "I never really expected us to get serious."

"I know, but I want this to work, us to work."

She smiles at him, "Small steps, right?"

He's not entirely sure if she's ready but every step counts.

"Still seeing Chase?"

"Still don't see how that's your business." She doesn't stop writing in the file she's holding. "What do you want?"

She hates herself for asking.

"I need your help."

This stops her; she hesitates and starts to turn slowly. He continues, "It involves a missing parakeet and Cuddy's skirt."

She really hates herself for asking.

"You're never going to change." She gets him now; this doesn't upset her the way it might've in the past. Instead, she sees the amusement in his eyes and takes this for what it is.

"You never know."

"Is this how you were planning on telling me?" House stares at her, resignation letter in hand.

She points casually at the paper he is holding. "You knew anyway, you even called the hospital in Boston to let them know they could have me."

"Are you feelings hurt?" His voice is cold.

She won't admit to him that it had hurt. "I'll finish the two weeks."

"You can go now."

She knew he was going to say that. "Thanks, I can clear my desk."

"Don't bother coming back!"

She knew he was going to say that as well. So predictable.
