This is just a short intro into my new story. It is starting before Rowans parents split up and before Jack dies. Hope you enjoy!
Scattered leaves
I always used to walk in the park nearby my school almost everyday to get home. It was a nice park, with great oaks and maple trees along each path, and occasionally you would see the glimmer of a silver birch. I always walked on one particular path, always the same one, which would turn past a rowan tree. Did I mention, my name's Rowan, an unlikely name for a girl. But seeing as a rowan tree is supposed to protect you from bad things, I have always cherished the name. Stroma, that's my little sister, always had a crazy idea that if she kissed the thick bark on the tree every day after school, she would stay safe. Which she did.
If it was raining heavily after a school day, Stroma and I would sprint as fast as we could to that tree, as fast as Stroma's little legs could take her, that is. Then we would sit on the root that grew out the ground until the grey skies cleared, then we would be completely dry to walk home for the leaves on the rowan tree grew in abundance, crowding over each other so not a drop of rain could drip through. We used to love that tree.
It was then that one day, after passing the tree with Stroma, we both stopped dead in our tracks. "Where's it gone?" Stroma asked.
"I don't know, Stro" I said, confused. The tree had always been there, how could it have just vanished?
I watched from a distance as Stroma ran up to the place where the tree had originally been, saw her turn in circles then finding a small tree stump which she then sat on.
I walked over to join her and I crouched next to her tiny frame, putting my arm around it. Her eyes welled up with tears and she began to splutter and sob, and I joined in. We sat like that for what seemed like hours; until I started questioning how many tears I could cry until they'd all run out.
"Where's my safety gonna come from now?" Stroma asked, speaking for the first time. She got up and started kicking around the scattered leaves, which had so often saved us from getting hyperthermia.
"You've still got me, baby, and Mum and Dad and Jack. We can all keep you safe."
Hope you liked it. I think this is the first fanfic story written for Broken Soup, which is quite cool! (Broken Soup is under-rated!)
Review to tell me what you think!
