I marched into the kitchen. He had said women were supposed to be in the kitchen. Brothers! Eomer does NOT understand me! 'You should become more like a lady, and stay in the kitchen.' He had said. I am not a lady, nor do I like to be in the kitchen!
I sat exasperated in the straight back wooden chair by the baking oven. Eomer isn't fair! He knows that I can beat the majority of men in Rohan, sword fighting. Why can't he treat me like an equal? 'Eowyn, go make something in the kitchen.' He had ordered. I thought getting more irritated by the second.
A plan started forming in my mind. Just then I thought of the perfect way to get revenge, I jumped up out of the chair and started laughing. Eomer, you're right I should spend more time in the kitchen. I thought sarcastically. Sugar Cakes…perfect! I will rename those to Salt Cakes. I twirled around the room, humming a song, smiling to myself. What a perfect idea Eowyn!
I started mixing the ingredients together at the long marble counter. The recipe calls for four cups of sugar, I will just change sugar into salt. I fueled the fire, andI giggled to myself as I laid the Salt Cakes in the clay oven.
This is the worst part of baking, the waiting. I sat down impatiently by the oven. I will show Eomer how 'ladies' get revenge! As the 'Sugar Cakes' cooled, I got out a beautifully hand carved wooden platter and pulled out a few cloth napkins. When they cooled, I sprinkled a bit more salt on top of the cakes and placed them on the dish. Then I went to locate Eomer.
I found him sword practicing with one of the Rohanese men. After a bit they stopped for a break.
"Eomer! Please come here." I called. He walked up from the dueling enclosure.
"Yes, Eowyn?" He asked.
"I did what you told me and made Sugar Cakes," I replied. "Try one."
"Thank you. My friend, come and try one of my sister's Sugar Cakes." He called to his dueling partner, after taking one of the larger cakes. He took a large mouthful and his face looked funny as he found out that there was salt in the cake.
I almost burst out laughing, but instead I said, "Do you like them?"
He choked down the first bite and answered, "There… um… great!"
I turned to his dueling partner and asked the same question.
"Made to perfection," He said trying to smile.
"I insist that you take another one! I am so glad you think they are good!" I said smiling, holding the plate out to them again. They both painfully swallowed down another cake.
"I am going to put these in the pantry, if you want another one." I said turning and quickly walking back to the kitchen. I burst into the building and laughed and laughed.
The look on Eomer's face was priceless. Finally I got even with him. I'll just leave these on the pantry shelf in case anyone else would like a taste of Eowyn's revenge!
I have always laughed when I have thought about that day in the kitchen and my revenge on Eomer.
