She Couldn't Stop the Pain
She couldn't stop the pain…whenever it came, it overtook her…she never could stop it…
It was always him. He always took her pain away…and now he was gone…forever.
She couldn't stop the pain…
She kneeled on the cold, hard earth, numbness overtaking her. She could feel her heart pounding faster than it had ever before. Her emotions were threatening to take over…so she simply stopped fighting.
The first tears were easy…soft and sobbing. But soon she started to wish she hadn't started. These tears were hard, mournful, painful… Streaming down her cheeks, her eyes burning, her throat choked. It was too much to take. The sand beneath her stained with tears. She gulped loudly and startled herself. Her chest heaving, her head throbbing, and her heart heavy with sorrow; she made a decision. She forced herself up…and set off, weeping all the while.
It was dark, she didn't have a light, and she was bawling…not a good combination. By the time she had reached the caves, she had scrapes and cuts all over her body, but she had hardly noticed. She stumbled and tripped, landing swiftly and sharply. She fought the temptation to swear under her breath and stood up. In the faint moonlight she saw what she was looking for. Her heart stopped, her tears ceasing momentarily. Taking a deep breath, she took the plunge and drew back the leaky tarpaulin, scrounged from the wreckage.
His face.
She wasn't prepared for this.
His face.
Stained with blood…desperate…dead.
How she hated that word. Death.
She shook her head, no! No! NO! NO! NO! NO! She shrieked it at the top of her voice, who cares if anyone heard? NO! WHY? Why? Her yell diminished into a soft, sob coming straight from her heart. No.
She stood. She had to complete her mission. Then she could leave. Then she could be at peace. She scavenged in the dark, her tears finding their way to the floor all the while. Finally, in desperation, she tore a piece from her dress and drenched it water.
Slowly, carefully, lovingly, she washed his face…He deserved to be clean…it was the least she could do… Her tears mingled with the water dripping off the makeshift cloth. Her moans mingled with the jungle noises. Her pain was unbearable. She couldn't take it…he was supposed to take her pain away! This was the part where he should kiss her and make her worries vanish, hold her and make her tears stop.
But now he was gone. There was nobody to kiss away her tears. Nobody. She was on her own.
