My first How I Met Your Mother fic. Just a little scene to show how I would like things to happen.

Robin stood looking at the locket in her hand. "Where did you get this?" she asked as she raised her eyes to Ted.

He shrugged. "It was in my pencil box this whole time." He said, wondering if she would see it as a sign as well, or if it really was too late for them.

Robin smiled, tears in her eyes as she looked at him. She held the locket to her heart as the smile turned sad. "Thank you, so much for this Ted. This locket will always be so important to me." She said, and they both knew she wasn't really talking about the locket.

"But I think it's time to really move on, and leave this locket in the past where it belongs." She said.

Ted nodded and smiled. "Yeah, you're probably right." He said. He reached for the door and cleared his throat. "I better go and check on Barney, see if he needs anything."

Robin nodded and Ted turned to leave, but stopped short as she called out to him.

"Ted." She said.

He turned back to her, his brows raised.

She smiled and held up the locket. "This necklace may be in the past, but I will always need it. It will always have a place in my heart."

Ted smiled again, a genuine one this time and nodded. Then without another word he left, closing the door behind him.

Everything was different, but everything was exactly the same. The door on him and Robin was finally closed for good. And he was sad, but he was happy for his friends.

A few hours later everything would change again as he stood at that station and met the women that would become the most important person in the world to him. It would just take him a little longer to realize, because while the change would be huge, it would come in small doses, healing his heart a little more every day.

Until the day he would realize that the locket really was a thing of the past. It would always remain an important part, a part that change their whole group for the better, but it would stay in the past where it belonged.
