And Then Our Relationship Died

By: Riley

Summary - And just like that, with neither pomp nor fanfare, our relationship died. CainexDiana drabble

"I suppose I should have seen this coming," Caine said, trying to act tough, to show that this wasn't hurting him, but failing miserably.

I have a sudden urge to take it all back, to tell him that I didn't mean what I said, and that this was all just some practical joke. It was stupid and I knew it, but for a moment the urge is almost too strong to resist.

"Is it something I did?" he asks. "I know I haven't always been the best…"

"No, it's not you," I cut him off. "I swear this has nothing to do with you."

He doesn't believe me, but still he smiles at me gently – pretending. Even now, even as I'm tearing out his heart and stomping on it, he's still doing what he can to make me happy.

"Look, I know its clichéd," Caine paused for a second. "But I'd like for us to still be friends," he tells me.

"I'd like that too," I assure him.

I wonder though if we will be able to remain friends, to simply return to the way things were before. Having crossed the line between friendship and something more, it feels as though we have long since passed the point of no return.

"If you ever need anything, I'm always here for you," he says, his voice soft. He pauses. "No matter what," he adds.

"I know," I say with a sad smile on face. "Thank you," I almost whisper.

"You're welcome, Diana."

And just like that, with neither pomp nor fanfare, our relationship died.

A/N: A short CainexDiana one-shot, I guess it's a drabble. The way I see the CainexDiana pairing behind closed doors and if they're being completely honest and open with each other is delicate towards each other and I feel that them breaking up would be the same way. Then on the outside, Caine would go back to his badass self. So that's why they're kinda OOC in this, but I like it anyway. I hope you guys like it too.

Cheers,
