Summary: A bittersweet and slightly poetic musing of James' need to protect the one that he loves most; Lily.
Rated G.
AN: Now, I know the style of this is a bit strange and definitely different. Basically, the first and end paragraphs are the more poetic ones, the ones that tie all James' thoughts up in a way, and everything in the middle is the actual fic. Please review and tell me what you think. This is something very different from what I usually write, as most of my usual readers probably have noticed. ;)
Near

And I can feel you breathing and it's keeping me awake.
Can you feel it beating, my heart sinking like a weight?

----------
She lies next to me, her red hair fanned out around her head, brushing against my nose as I try so hard to fall asleep in our bed. She's a thing of beauty lying there, so heavenly as she slumbers. She's safe here, next to me; I don't even need to ponder.
----------
I drape an arm carefully over her waist, holding her close as I reassure myself that nothing can happen to her as long as I'm near. We're safe as long as we're together, nothing can harm us.
She stirs slightly as I hold her close, but she remains asleep, my angel. I vaguely wonder how many more nights I'll have to hold her like this, but I push those horrible thoughts away. We'll be fine as long as we're together, I remind myself. Nothing can happen to her as long as I'm near.
I'll stay awake all night, just to know that she'll be safe. I watch her sleep as though I'm her protector, watching over her like a guardian angel. She'll be fine as long as I'm near.
My insides churn at every creak that sounds in the house as I imagine Voldemort himself walking through the door, wand in hand, waiting to commit the murders that he has been planning for so long.
But as long as I'm near, we'll be safe and we'll be strong, as long as we're near, we'll never be alone.
----------
I hold Lily closer, so close that I can feel it as she exhales. Faintly her heart beats, just loudly enough so that only I can hear. Somewhere in our home a clock ticks away the time, and deep inside I know, that no matter what happens, we'll be fine.
