I really wanted this.
I heard a loud bang and moved through the shelves towards the sound calling Reed's name.
"Reed? What was that?"
I moved past the last shelf and stared right into the barrel of a loaded gun. I froze and the only sound that could be heard was the small gasp that I had allowed to pass my lips.
"Are you a doctor?" The man asked.
"I… ah…." I couldn't think. I couldn't speak. I looked down and was horrified by the scene in front of me. Reed, or Reed's body, lay face up with her head turned towards me. Her eyes had remained open even after the shot and a small trickle of blood had begun to escape down her forehead from the small bullet hole. A rapidly growing puddle had begun to form under her body and no life existed behind her once bright eyes. This couldn't be happening. This was a hospital. This was the place that people went to when they needed to get better.
Too much was happening all at once and I couldn't even begin to process the question. Was I a doctor? I couldn't remember. My memory returned as the barrel was pressed against my heart.
I asked if you were a doctor and I suggest you answer before you end up like your friend. He motioned toward Reed with his shoulder and I stuttered over the words that could possibly lead me in the same place as Reed.
"I-I-I I don't…I-I mean, I...ah." What could I say? Do I say yes and get a bullet straight to my heart? Do I lie and say that I'm just an intern? There was no right answer. I couldn't yell for help and expect not to get shot. I was running out of time and he was getting impatient for my answer. I couldn't do this. I reacted before my brain could process what I was doing. My body turned and then I was running, well stepping two steps before another loud bang was heard and I registered a severe pain in my side. M y hands shot out and they caught my body before it could hit the ground. I slumped to the ground and I heard faint steps as the man moved away from two victims and into the hallway in search of his intended target.
I remained on the floor until I was sure that he was gone and then pushed up on my hands. A pain so intense rocked my body and my stomach rolled. Black spots formed behind my eyelids and I took a deep breath. I couldn't black out. I needed to get help or I was going to die. With all my strength I pushed up again and army crawled my way to the elevators. Using all my strength I pressed the up button and the doors slid open. Once inside I pushed the button for the main floor and then collapsed. I could feel the black pushing in on me, but before I could completely pass out I heard that small familiar ping. What wasn't familiar was the screams that pushed their way into my head. Oh God, he was already here. What was I going to do now? Time was running out for me.
Then something happened.
A gasp came from the entrance and I slowly turned my head toward the sound. If there was one thing that I needed to see before I died, this would be it.
"Mark."
"Lexie." Then the black took over.
