Disclaimer: I do not own The Hunger Games in any shape or form.
A/n: This is a modified piece. It was originally part of a series, based on a '24 tribute' series i did many months ago. I decided not to upload this series. However, I liked this one the most out of the chapters i wrote and decided to extend it slightly and upload it. Therefore, credit must be given to Realityshowfan for giving me the original idea.
Who is Jane Berry?
"They're going to ask you about her, you know. What are you going to say?"
"They won't ask."
"But say she does well. What will you say?"
"I don't know."
"I think you should work something out. Just in case."
What sort of person is Jane Berry? How can I answer that?
The basics, of course: she's the female tribute of District 6 in the 74th Hunger Games. But you already know that. So what can I tell you?
She's a kind person. One of the kindest people I will ever meet. She's a loving person – if she loves you, you're hers' forever. Loyalty, you could call it, but I know there's something more to her. I guess this is the sort of thing every person would say about their loved ones though. Maybe I should tell you something else.
She likes to meet people. She likes to make friends. No matter who it is, no matter where she is, Jane will try to make friends with any new person.
(The first day of school, she says hello to me in the line. The first day of school, she becomes my friend forever)
Maybe that also applies to a lot of people. But she's adventurous too. If she learns something new, she has to try it herself. That's just who she is. I don't know what she gains from the experience but I know she will still try it, no matter what the consequences may be.
(Ten years old and she kisses me on the lips – just to see what it's like)
(Ten years old and I wipe my lips disgustedly, ignoring the look of hurt on her face)
She has her bad aspects too. I should talk about those – make it clear who she really is. She's prone to fits of temper –
(A slap on the face when I constantly tease her about her ugly new dress)
- but I think everyone has those moments. They're not what make her special. Maybe it's her insecurity? She has that, a lot. But it's more than that. Jane worries what people will think of her but it doesn't rule her life. She worries about being lonely: she knows she never will be.
I love her for her imperfections, even if I can't describe them.
Is there anything I do dislike? I didn't think there was anything serious. But I know now: I dislike her practicality. I dislike her desire to keep her promises.
("Will you marry me?" I ask.
"No.")
Jane is the sort of person you'd get to know if you met her.
("Why not?" I ask, still holding the ring.
She looks around the room. I have about two minutes left to say goodbye.
"Because I can't. I can't agree to that."
"You can. You'll come home and be my wife!")
But Jane is going to die.
(She closes the lid on the box, hiding the ring from sight. "No."
"But, I love you," I say sadly.
She leans down and kisses me softly. "I love you too. I'm yours for the rest of my life. That, I can promise you. But not marriage. Not something that will never happen.")
What sort of person is Jane Berry?
(The one with my heart but not my hand?)
Guess you'll never know now.
