Title: Protection Detail
Author: Lady Taevyn
Rating: PG
Pairing: Cain/DG (I honestly don't think I could write anything else for this fandom)
Summary: Cain wonders what he's gotten himself into by promising to protect DG.
Disclaimer: Cain's on my Christmas list, but I don't own any of the characters in this story.
A/N: I've taken some liberties with secondary characters because it fits my story better. Let me know what you think of it.
Wyatt Cain wasn't a very religious man, but he found himself praying more often these days, now that he had promised to protect DG. He would be forever grateful that she had gotten him out of his tin prison but she was going to drive him to an early grave. For so long all he had wanted was revenge; but now that need had taken a distant second place to his need to protect DG. He had always prided himself on keeping his promises but this one that he made to The Mystic Man was one he was having trouble with. They had gone to the worst part of the Realm of the Unwanted into the seediest bar and from the start he had known something wasn't right; even without Raw's empathic ability. As the net dropped around him and he heard DG's screams fading Wyatt wanted to kick himself. Then when Tutor found them at the resistance camp and said DG was in trouble Wyatt felt something cold and heavy settle into his stomach. He had just realized his worst fear; both his wife and son were dead, and now it looked like he had lost DG also. He had gone a little nuts watching his wife and son tortured but now he didn't have the excuse of a tin suit to hide behind. He should have been able to protect her.
As they neared the location Tutor had last seen DG the group dismounted their horses and stood looking into the forest. After several breathless moments Wyatt heard, in the back of his mind, a sob and a quiet whisper 'Cain, I'm scared, please help me'. He had to clench his jaw to keep from calling out to her. Now an eternity later Wyatt sees the most beautiful sight in the Zone; DG looking a little scared and out of it, but ok.
"I'm sorry I didn't get here sooner Princess. Are you ok?" He says when she grabs a hold of him around the neck. He returns the grip around her waist knowing it's what she needs, what he wants. She doesn't answer him till she's seated in front of him on his horse. When she turns to look at him she has unshed tears filling her eyes; he wants to take them away from her.
"No, I'm not ok. Not yet anyway; now that you're here I'm doing better though." She says and leans into him when he urges the horse into a fast trot. "There wasn't anything you could have done, she took the emerald and locked me in that place so fast I didn't even know what happened. But that doesn't matter now; 'cause you're real and you're here, protecting me." If he grabs the reigns, and her by default, a little tighter after she says this neither mention it. He wonders briefly as they make their way to the tower when exactly this went from 'protection detail' to watching over someone he loves.
End? I'm not too sure, I've got an idea for moreā¦
