Author's Note: This story is from the Howard Hawk's film adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's novel 'To Have and Have Not'. If you haven't seen it, you're not likely to understand this. The character's that are owned by the writers are Marie "Slim" Browning, Harry "Steve" Morgan, and Eddie. I hope you all enjoy the first chapter.

They hadn't been away from the dock for an hour before the water became choppy and thunder began to rumble overhead. Harry 'Steve' Morgan glowered at the sky as it lit up with lightening. They had already set out towards the Port au Prince, and unless they were to go way off track, there were no islands to stop off at. Squinting out ahead of him, he saw Marie-'Slim'- stumbling across the deck.

"Eddie take the wheel!" He growled handing the control to his drunken companion and rushing outside. "What are you doing?" He demanded grabbing Marie's soaked arm. "One false step and you'll be in the water!"

"I was feeling nauseas." The thin woman murmured clutching to him. "I needed air."

"So you thought drowning yourself would make you feel better?" Harry shook his head and led her into the cabin. "Sit down here and dry off." He ordered sitting her on the bench and grabbing a towel from under the wheel and wrapping it around her. He pushed her bangs back and placed a gentle hand on her forehead.

"You are looking a bit pale." He observed rubbing his hands on her arms to induce friction. "How long have you been feeling bad?"

"About an hour." Slim answered resting her head back against the wall. "I guess I'm just used to larger boats…" She chuckled in an attempt to lighten the mood. "I'm sorry, I'll go back down to bed…" She went to stand up, but Harry stopped her.

"I'm going with you, hold on." He stood up and walked over to Eddie, "I'm going below deck for a bit, you come and get me if you need anything okay?"

"Okay Harry." Eddie nodded with a crooked smile. "You can count on me."

"I know Eddie, that's why I'm leaving it to you." Harry patted his back before grabbing Marie around the waist and leading her down the stairs leading to the hull. "Go ahead and change into some warm clothes, I'll grab a couple more blankets." He said pulling her suitcase out from under the bed and opening it for her.

Marie nodded and pulled out her most comfortable nightgown. "Don't peek." She said in fake coyness as she began to unbutton her blouse and then her skirt. Harry grinned and pulled some fleece blankets from the cupboard by the bed.

"I wouldn't dare." He deadpanned. He waited patiently as she changed her clothes as quick as she could without her nausea getting worse on the tilting boat.

"Alright." Slim announced when her nightgown was secure. Steve didn't waste any time before helping her lie down on the narrow cot and covering her up. "Aren't you coming in?" The woman asked suggestively scooting over, making room for him.

"I think I'll just sit here." Harry sighed, cursing chivalry and sitting at the foot of the bed. "I'd hate to make you a dishonest woman the same week I haul you away from normality." Marie laughed.

"We're still in bed together." She observed nudging his leg with her covered foot. Harry caught the offending appendage and began rubbing it.

"Just relax, the storm should pass soon." He ordered leaning his head back against the wall. Slim complied and relaxed against the pillows.

"How long does it take to get to Prince au Port?" She inquired closing her eyes in an attempt to cease the nausea.

"About a week, without stops." Harry estimated. "If it keeps storming like this it could take longer." Marie sighed and burrowed deeper under the covers.

"That's a long time to remain a honest woman, under any circumstance." Her voice grumbled from beneath the blankets. Harry laughed and patted her feet as they both let the waters lull them to sleep.
