A SMALL BUT FATAL WEAKNESS
By: Vanessa Sgroi
At 2:00 a.m., the motel room was quiet save for the soft snores emanating from one bed and the click-click-clack of computer keys originating from the other. Dean rubbed his eyes with one hand as he followed another embedded link opening yet another website. A ping sounded and a small window popped open. Word of the Day. Yeah, leave it to Sam. Still a geek.Curious, Dean looked closer at the text.
Word of the Day
Achilles heel—n:
A small but fatal weakness
The hunter gave a small snort. He knew—had always known—what—or who—his Achilles heel was. Dean glanced at his little brother who was currently curled into an impossibly small ball sound asleep. Sam. For better or worse, it always would be. He sighed ruefully. And every bad-ass sonuvabitch in Hell, Heaven, and everywhere in between knew it too.
At one time—for a brief time anyway—he'd been Sam's Achilles heel too. Though Dean sensed that had changed. The thought kneaded at the ball of unease in the pit of his belly. He clicked the window closed, refocused his tired eyes on the next sensational headline and ignored that ever-present ball of unease.
