Author's Note: The inspiration for this poem initially came from Chris Rice's song I See the Moon, as reflected in the first two lines. However, the poem's meaning is different from that of his song. It was written a while back, when I was going through a hard time and helped to remind me to keep my eyes on Jesus, who is always true and faithful, and was always there for me.
Disclaimer: I do not own the copyrights to the Bible, nor do I own Chris Rice's song.
Illusions
I see the moon,
The moon sees me,
A mirror of reflection
Of desires unrealized.
My ears strain to hear
The sought after sounds-
Laughter and friendship,
Wellness and fulfillment.
Ever so solid in mind's eye,
Wishes of a lifetime
Caught in the span
Of a minute's impressions.
Echoes of a distant dream,
So vivid in the moon's beam,
Faded away in an instant,
As in a life past.
Bitter disappointment left,
Will-o-the-wisp of a strange land,
Ramblings of moonstruck heart
Given way to heartache.
Now a shattered dream,
Bleeding shards of glass,
I turn my gaze upward,
Beyond the desolation.
What do I see?
When illusive dreams fade
And hopes are torn,
What is left?
In bleak, barren skies,
From the four corners
Of Earth's constant foundation,
There is engraved, a cross.
Soaked in the blood
Of the One who gave His all,
Jesus Christ, Son of God,
Born of Spirit and flesh.
"Greater love hath no man than this,
That a man lay down his life
For his friends,"
As Jesus did for us all.
Beginning and the End,
Alpha and Omega-
"Never will I leave you
Nor forsake you."
Promises sure, ever true,
Beyond deceptive sight of my heart,
My soul's Shelter, my High Tower,
No illusion in You, my Savior and my Lord.
