I looked away from my computer screen and stopped my music as I heard my phone start to ring. I picked it up from beside me on the desk and looked at the caller ID but it was an unknown number. I pressed the answer button expecting some random person to start talking but there was silence.

"Hello?" I asked cautiously. For a moment there was more silence.

"Hello?" a voice floated down the line, sounding like there was static in the background, and sounding somewhat familiar.

"Who is this?" I asked and brushed off my previous thought of it been someone I knew.

"Who's this?' the anonymous person asked back.

"Tom..." I reply warily.

"Oh, hey, it's Danny..."

"Hey!" I said, surprised. I never would have thought he would call me. Danny had come to my school at the start of the year. We'd come to be pretty good friends, but not best friends. Then news came that he was leaving at the end of the year, he was going to Australia. So after hearing the news we promised, along with everyone else who were friends, that we wouldn't think about that day until it came.

"What are you doing?" Danny asked.

"Nothing..." I replied, still shocked he had called me.

"O-h, sounds fun," he laughed.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"Not a lot...getting ready to go out for dinner...Just had some spare credit on my phone so I thought I'd ring you..." Danny said. I bit my lip and clenched my fist shut.

"Oh...Well thanks," I replied.

"Yeah...So..." he hummed. I didn't know what to say. "Well, it looks like everyone is ready to go so...yeah..."

"Oh, ok...Yeah," I mumbled.

"Ok, well...I'll talk to you later..." Danny said and I could hear people in the background.

"Yeah..." I whispered.

"Bye," he said, still sounding happy like he always did.

"Bye," I said. Then the line went dead. My hands shook, I sucked in a couple of deep breaths because it felt like the air around me was diminishing. The phone slipped from my hands, cluttering onto the desk. I didn't know why he called me, why he'd use the last of his credit on me, but he did. I sucked in a deep breath and felt the onslaught or emotion coming. Quickly I started up my music again and locked my bedroom door. And then I fell back into my chair and let the tears run down my face, hot and fast and full of love and anger. The day we promised we wouldn't think about was upon us. Tomorrow he would be gone forever, and I would never see him again. He promised to come back but he was moving to Australia with his family and things were easier said than done. I pulled my jacket around me tighter and crossed my arms while I cried long and hard.

Now I look up to my computer screen and my background is rotating through pictures and it just happens to land on the one of Danny and I. We'd been on a school excursion and I'd been taking pictures with everyone. My heart begins to break as I realise it's too late to tell him the truth.

"I love you Danny..." I whisper. I put my head in my hands and sob. Danny will be gone tomorrow and my world will be all shades of grey...My life will be shattered and over...

This story is dedicated to a special friend of mine and if he ever happens to read this... "I love you, always did, always will". I never thought saying goodbye would be this hard. I guess I'll stop crying one day. xxx
