I sat on the couch holding Harry in my arms. He was squirming and gurgling watching the lights James made with his wand. He was laughing almost as hard as Harry was. I couldn't help but laugh along. They were so alike...
All of the sudden we heard a crash from the hall. James froze.
"It's him Lily! Take Harry and go! I'll try to hold him off as long as I can!"
Oh god, no. No, no, no, no, no! It can't be. Not tonight. Oh god.
"James!"
"Go!"
I nodded frantically and he turned to the door.
"I love you!" I blurted out. He turned slightly.
"I love you too, Lils. I love you too."
I sprinted up the stairs, clutching at Harry up into his nursery. I slammed the door and sat Harry down in his crib.
"Harry... Mommy loves you," I whispered. I heard high cruel laughter from downstairs and choked back a sob. "Daddy loves you. Harry, you are loved."
Harry stared up at me. I kissed his forehead.
The door was blasted open behind me.
Lord Voldemort stood in the doorway. He was chalky pale, with red eyes and a black cloak. His wand was outstretched.
"Not Harry, please, not Harry!" I begged.
"Stand aside, silly girl, stand aside!" he snarled in a high, clear voice.
"No! Not Harry! Have mercy! Please! Have mercy!"
"Stand aside!"
Harry just looked on at the scene curiously, like he didn't know what was happening. Voldemort raised his wand and I closed my eyes.
I love you James. I love you Harry. I thought. We'll be together again someday.
"AVADA KEDAVRA!"
