Any Moment, Anything Can Change

She watched him from across the other side of the bed they usually shared whenever he and his brother, Alphonse, decided to pay a visit.

She watched as he slid his boxers and pants back on, doing the belt buckle up.

She watched as he pulled his tight black shirt, which had been flung carelessly onto the bedroom lamp last night, over his head.

She watched as he continued doing this all the while never once turning around and giving her acknowledgement.

Frowning at his odd behavior, she sat up from her pillow. The blankets covered most of her naked body. "Your leaving again … aren't you?" It wasn't a question on her behalf but a blunt statement being made.

He did not turn around though, but continued dressing himself.

A small cruel smile spread across her face as she turned her head down to look at her hidden knees from underneath the blanket. "Is this …?" she questioned unsurely. "… All I am to you Ed? Someone whom you are able to seek comfort in only when you see fit? Someone … whom because you know feels something for you, you are able to abuse? Answer me now please." She looked up from her knees to see that he had finally stopped dressing himself but only because he was finished. She frowned at him and was about to speak when she was cutoff.

"– This … was a mistake." No sooner had the words left his lips that a gasp was heard coming from her.

"You can't –!" she exclaimed. "– possibly mean that Ed! How … h-how can y-you say that to m-me? After e-everything … you're just g-going to tell m-me that … it 'was a mistake'!"

"…" No reply came from him as he stood with his back to her still.

Tears started to emerge in the corner of her eyes but she refused to let them fall and give him the satisfaction. Slowly she turned her head away from him and lay back down on the bed with her head resting on one of the two pillows.

"Get out."

The words though foreign on her tongue, were spoken coldly and had the desired effect.

He exited the bedroom but stopped in the entranceway. It was only then that he finally turned around but knew she wasn't looking or listening …

"I'm sorry Winry," he whispered. "But I can't let this continue on knowing that you'll always be in constant danger because of me. I want you to know though … that to me, as Edward Elric, this can and never will be a mistake … but … to me, as Edward Elric the Fullmetal Alchemist … it was a mistake to even think that I could have you while pretending everything could go back – that I could go back to the way I used to be before we tried to bring mum back. I'm sorry."

No other words were spoken as he left except for one small phrase.

"To truly love somebody means you have to be willing to give up anything necessary for them … Even if that includes your own happiness."
