Legolas Dies
This is my first fic so please don't judge :)
Chapter One
Legolas stood at the edge of the cliff, scanning the horizon for threats as his comrades chatted idly behind him.
"More rabbit stew," Gimli sighed. "It'll be the death of me. I miss the rich meats of the dwarves. Then again, I miss anything that isn't rabbit." Noises of approval greeted the statement as Boromir dished the food out.
The elf rolled his eyes and returned to the group. Aragorn glanced up, silently asking if danger was near. Legolas shook his head and Aragorn smiled slightly, offering him a steaming bowl of soup.
"No, thank you. I do not consume flesh." Gimli snorted and Legolas looked at him sharply.
"The fickleness of the elves has always tickled me." The dwarf chuckled. "You don't know what you're missing out on! Deer roasted slowly over a spit, hams smoked in the highest peaks, game grilled in fresh herbs for days. One thing we don't have is RABBIT!"
They licked their lips, the phantom scents of the indulgent meats invading their nostrils as they gazed sadly at their food. Legolas wrinkled his nose.
"That does not sound pleasant to me, but then, the dwarves' ways have always eluded-" his head snapped up, staring into the trees. He sat perfectly still, watching something the other's couldn't see. The hobbits glanced at each other uneasily.
"Mr Legolas?" Pippin piped up. "What's wrong?" Legolas put a finger to his lips and reached for his bow. An ear-splitting shriek cut through the tense silence, and everyone drew their weapons, standing quickly and forming a tight circle around Frodo.
"Legolas!" Aragorn whispered. "What do you see?"
"Minas Morgul!" the elf murmured back, drawing his bow. A blast of light illuminated the trees as Gandalf raised his staff.
"Protect Frodo! Protect the ring!" he shouted, his staff glowing with an unearthly blue light. Gimli's axe reflected the light, blinding them as the ringwraiths exploded into the clearing.
Legolas released his arrow and Aragorn threw his knife. Gimli swung his axe and Gandalf shot white flames from his staff. Boromir parried with his sword and the little hobbits darted round, stabbing with their knives. The nine were pushed further and further back until they turned and fled. Legolas sprinted after them.
"Legolas!" Aragorn shouted. "Where are you going?"
"We must make sure they do not return! At least, not until we're closer to Mordor!" Legolas shouted over his shoulder. Aragorn picked up his sword and sprinted after Legolas.
"Fine, but I'm coming with you!" they followed the shrill cries of the Minas Morgul towards another clearing. Legolas fired his arrows, each time a hit. The wraiths wailed as the arrows cut their bodies. Legolas grimaced, and glanced at Aragorn. He was fighting two, but a third had drawn his bow, aiming it at Aragorn. Legolas reached for his own arrows, but there were none left.
"Aragorn! Behind you!" he shouted, but the ranger did not hear him over the wraiths. The nine were retreating, but Aragorn still didn't see the archer. Legolas ran towards him and pushed him out the way as the wraith released its arrow. It turned and ran with its companions.
Aragorn stared in horror at the arrow embedded in Legolas's side, and their eyes met for a brief moment before Legolas's legs buckled and he collapsed into Aragorn's arms.
Cliff-hanger! Chapter two will follow! Please leave reviews and I'll adjust the fic accordingly.
